A buddy of mine once described the miraculous moment in which Cat Power won him over. He explained that he had caught one of her shows in a modest venue in some forgotten town, some forgotten time. He described this emotionally charged image of Cat Power singing with all of her might, straddling mere godliness, and then was suddenly interrupted – she had to pee. What was a girl to do? The only thing that she could do: take her microphone into the restroom with her. There she was, serenading a crowd of people while doin’ her business on the toilet. Despite the perhaps coarse manner of this moment, Cat Power did not fail to maintain her composure and her beautiful melodies, and she certainly does not fail to do so on The Greatest. In fact, the delicious wispy-flight of this album in combination with her raspy vocal color makes The Greatest pretty much the greatest.
