Karl Blau - Beneath Waves (K Records)
K records, since it's very beginning, has had an unusual aesthetic. Beat Happening started that label with their "we learned to play guitars an hour before the show" skills and heartfelt, occasionally naive-sexy lyrics. Two decades later, Tender Forever's Melanie Valera continues that tradition with an album that sounds like the K records version of the Postal Service. Valera's self-taught electro-pop bonks and clanks while the Postal Service beeps and chimes. It wouldn't be K records if it had studio polish. The lyrical tradition continues, as well. Valera's songs have a focus on youthful romance while occasionally venturing into sexiness ("Take It Off" is about showering with your significant other, for instance). Her voice is unpolished, but strong. It conveys these makeout party musings with power, yet manages to retain an intimate whisper at the same time. The indie-electro music makes the album poppy and fun, and the vocals make it earnest and believable. Interspersed between the electro-pop's tiny bedroom dance parties are heartfelt acoustic numbers reminiscent of label-mate Mirah. Simple songs strummed with well-above-coffee-house fare lyrics delivered in the aforementioned forceful/pillow-talk style. When it's all done, Tender Forever keep the K Records banner flying proud. Another release of personal, inviting music that makes it feel like part of a musical community. Their artists are doing what they love in the way they taught themselves, and all they want to do is to invite you in to share it. And while you're there, you may get a little action. Maybe.
