Chances
are that if you like The Blood Brothers, then you probably have
a MySpace. And if you have a MySpace, then you’ve probably
heard Neon Blonde already. But for those of you that think I’m
a condescending asshole for saying that, I’ll recap. Neon
Blonde is the side project of Johnny Whitney and Mark Gajadhar,
though it could easily pass as some of Johnny’s solo work.
But I’m not trying to discount the album – it certainly
has its moments, like “Love Hounds” and “Chandeliers
and Vines.” However, those don’t save the album
from becoming a bit derivative. At some points, I thought I might’ve
been listening to a Steve Aoki club remix. At others, the songs
just seemed like flat Blood Brothers b-sides. Don’t let this
discourage you, though. Strip away some of the unnecessary blips
and beats and it’s a good album at heart.
