Just about every rock critic that had something to say in 2001 is kicking themselves in the ass right now. Not only did The Strokes not pan out to be the saviors of rock that many had proclaimed them to be, but the band has all but dropped off the face of current music,. Unfortunately for them, it’s safe to say that First Impressions of Earth isn’t going to do them any favors. While not a terrible album by any means, it is simply mediocre, as it finds The Strokes treading the same water as their earlier albums with only minor diversification. But with The Strokes and other “garage” rockers on their way out and 80’s new wave revivalism clearly wearing out its welcome, I can only wonder what’s next. Shoegaze, anyone?
