There’s
not much to say about Xiu Xiu that hasn’t already been said.
Yes, they are “confrontational.” Yes, they like to play
what some talking-head critics might refer to as “art-pop.”
So then, what else is there to say about La Forêt? Well, a
lot, actually. It’s fragile and it’s bitter. It’s
beautiful and it’s awkward. It’s a typical Xiu Xiu album.
There are moments of droning noise and there are moments of odd,
danceable pop. In the end, though, it all doesn’t quite come
together the way that A Promise or Fabulous Muscles did. But a mediocre
Xiu Xiu album is still a good album.
