Space has been set aside for use by all undergrad students and graduate students, 1TB has been set aside for each group. Any one with an active ICS account may use the space.
Important things to keep in mind:
- Support is not managing the space
- Support is not backing up the space
- Support is not policing the space
- Files will be deleted after an account expires (with a 30-day grace period)
- When space runs low, support will publicly post dishog messages within reason
- Set the umask to 77
How to acces the space:
- Unix
- Undergrad: navigate to /extra/ugrad_space
- Grad: navigate to /extra/grad_space
- Windows
- Undergrad: Map Network Drive to \\troll.ics.uci.edu\ugrad_space
- Grad: Map Network Drive to \\troll.ics.uci.edu\grad_space
Each space is writable by the corresponding group. Any student can create files in the top level directory. It is best to create a sub directory from here for yourself based on your username (i.e. mkdir /extra/grad_space/joeuser`). Strict permissions (mode 700) are enforced for Windows clients but unix users may wish to set the permissions on their new directory (`chmod 700 /extra/grad_space/joeuser`). See the man page for chmod for more information on unix permissions.Up to a week snapshots will be available in: /extra/grad_space/.zfs and /extra/ugrad_space/.zfs Users can navigate through the .zfs directory to retrieve old files from the previous week.
NOTE: Please backup any critical data to other storage frequently. We will not be running tape backups. And although there is hardware redundancy, one massive hardware failure or other disaster can wipe out the space entirely. The target user for the grad space is the unaffiliated grad. However, if space is going unused, there is no reason that an affiliated grads could not use it.
