If you are interested in doing research with meIf you are not already an admitted student, or at least are or will be physically present in Irvine, it is unlikely that you will be able to do research with me.
Ordinarily I require research students to commit to at least two quarters. Occasionally I have a research project on which a single quarter's work will be useful. If you are only available for one quarter, please tell me in your email so that we do not waste each other's time unnecessarily.
I work with both graduate students and undergraduates. It is possible for undergraduates to get project credit if I can collect a group to work as a team. I am happy to work with graduate students that are not my advisees if I have time and we have a topic of mutual interest.
If you have a research topic you are excited about working on, let's discuss it. If it is a topic I am also interested in, and one that I think we can do something good with, then that will be the topic of your research work.
You do not need to come prepared with a research topic, however. I have a list of available projects and we will discuss them and decide whether there is one you are excited about and that is suitable for your level and the available time.
It's best if you contact me before the quarter begins or during the first week of the quarter, so we can get you going and up to speed before much of the ten weeks have passed.
You will be registered as whichever one of the following is appropriate:
| Undergrads | ICS 199 Individual Study | 2-5 units |
| Honors students only | ICS 198 Honors Research | 4 units |
| Grads | ICS 299 Individual Study | 2-12 units |
| Thesis students only | ICS 298 Thesis Supervision | 2-12 units |
A summary of my expectations of you are listed here.
If you are only interested in work for financial support, tell me so up front and save us both time.
I do not consider any student for financial support unless I already know them (usually through a course they have taken with me) and I have both an appropriate research project and a grant with money to pay for it. Except under unusual circumstances, I do not consider any student who has not already done research with me.
I receive many emails asking me for help in being admitted, or for internships. Due to the volume of emails and the impracticality of what is being asked, I do not respond to them. If you are already in Irvine and wish to do research in hopes of a future letter of recommendation, please come by my office so we can talk, or make this clear in your email's subject line and content.
If you are looking for an advisor, email me or come talk with me. Ordinarily I would have you do individual study first so that we both can evaluate each other.
