January 26, 2009Bren Professor of Information and Computer Science Judy Olson Named Fellow of the ACM
Irvine, Calif. – Judy Olson, Donald Bren Professor of Information and Computer Sciences at UC Irvine, has been named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in recognition for her contributions to human-computer interaction and computer-supported cooperative work.
Professor Olson joined UC Irvine’s Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences this fall from the University of Michigan where she was most recently the Richard W. Pew Collegiate Professor of Human Computer Interaction and associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Information.
An inaugural member of the CHI Academy, Olson was also recognized with ACM’s CHI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
Olson has focused her research on human interaction with computers, and achieved international acclaim for her studies that compared office workers in geographically distributed organizations to those working in the same location. She has published about 110 peer-reviewed research articles and is best known for her work on distance collaborations.
She also holds joint appointments in the Paul Merage School of Business and the School of Social Ecology.
A video of Professor Olson’s current research on “Studies of Distributed Work in the Lab” is available online.
The ACM Fellows Program was established by Council in 1993 to recognize and honor outstanding ACM members for their achievements in computer science and information technology and for their significant contributions to the mission of the ACM. The ACM Fellows serve as distinguished colleagues to whom the ACM and its members look for guidance and leadership as the world of information technology evolves.
ACM will formally recognize the 2008 Fellows at its annual Awards Banquet on June 27, 2009, in San Diego, CA.
