ICS Day 2017 connects students with the community

Cheers erupted as ICS students hit their target and dunked Dean Marios Papaefthymiou into a cold tank of water. Dunking the dean has become a time-honored tradition at ICS Day, the annual outdoor festival celebrating ICS students, organizations, faculty, staff and supporters.

The ICS Student Council (ICSSC), the official student government for the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, runs the event each year. More than 300 students registered and took part in the festivities held on May 17, 2017 in Engineering Plaza.

“Jonnathan Petote (current ICSSC president) and his crew did a really good job organizing the event this year,” said Sui Feng Xu, who was recently elected as next year’s ICSSC president.

While the sun shone and music filled the plaza, students explored different vendor booths and participated in various ICS club-sponsored activities. Several ICS student organizations, including the ACM UCI student chapter, MAISS (Management Information Student Society), Video Game Development Club (VGDC), Women in Information and Computer Sciences (WICS), Hack @ UCI, IEEE UCI and TAG (The Association of Gamers) @ UCI, returned to host informative and fun booths.

Newly welcomed this year were Cyber @ UCI, which sponsored a lock-picking booth, and the Data Science Association with their water pong booth. Both activities proved to be very popular with students and staff, alike.

In addition to vendor booths, participants enjoyed an inflatable obstacle course, photo station and, of course, dunking faculty into the tank.

This year’s sponsors included Northrop Grumman, Google, Facebook, Pariveda Solutions, Southern California Edison and ICS.
