WICS wins Most Outstanding Career/Professional Organization Anteater Award

The Women in Information and Computer Sciences (WICS) student club was awarded the Most Outstanding Career/Professional Organization at the 37th Annual Anteater Awards on May 17, 2017 at UCI’s Crystal Cove Auditorium.

A thankful Janay Nunez, co-president of WICS, said she and her fellow board members “couldn't have done it without all of the student members coming to all of our events, and of course our committee for helping plan them all! I hope that with everyone’s feedback and support, WICS can continue putting on even greater events next year.”

WICS is a student organization dedicated to helping women succeed in the technological world by providing activities such as professional and technical workshops, mock technical interviews, job and internship recourses, conference sponsorship, and numerous networking opportunities for all interested students.

WICS is supported by graduate adviser Katherine Lo, graduate mentor Heather Faucett, Assistant Dean for Access and Inclusion Sharnnia Artis, and ICS faculty advisers Debra Richardson and Sandra Irani. Richardson noted how proud she is of WICS: “The WICS organization has continued to evolve since we founded it in 1995. This cohort is a delight to work with and has made the organization so much stronger. This award is well-deserved, and I am especially proud of all their accomplishments.”

The Anteater Awards is an annual ceremony that honors UCI campus organizations for their many achievements throughout the academic year. The nomination process begins in the winter quarter and each submission is then reviewed and judged for awards in a range of categories. The three main award categories include Organization Awards, Specialty Awards and Cross-Cultural Center Awards. The Most Outstanding Career/Professional Organization award falls under the Organization Awards category. There were 24 awards in total this year. The theme for this year’s ceremony was “A Night of Pure Imagination” inspired by the 1971 classic film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
