| The Recursive Network Architcture (RNA) is an NSF FIND effort that explores the relationship of layer to protocol and network architecture. It examines the implications of using a single, tunable protocol--a metaprotocol--instantiated for different layers of a protocol stack. Though originally conceived as a way to avoid replicating functions across different layers, development of the RNA system suggests that layering and architecture are interdependent, and that recursion is a fundamental property of networking. This talk describes RNA and a recently completed initial prototype, and takes RNA a step further to explore its consequences on network architecture. The RNA prototype extends the Click modular router with control capabilities including dynamic composition and discovery. These capabilities demonstrate how stacks of instances of a single metaprotocol framework support both existing network protocol stacks, as well as new features suggested by virtual nets and the IETF's LISP and TRILL embedded network architectures. We examine, as a result, how--and why--networking may be inherently recursive. |

Joe received his Ph.D. in CS from the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1992, and has been at USC/ISI since. His current projects include virtual networks, optical Internets, automatic networks, and high-performance zero-configuration network security. His interests include Internet protocols, network architecture, high-speed & low-latency nets, network device design, and experimental network analysis. Joe is chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Communications, and serves on the editorial board of IEEE Network and Elsevier's Journal of Computer and Systems Sciences. He is active in the IETF's Transport and Internet areas and created the "better than nothing" security group, and he leads the IANA Ports Expert Review team. He holds 4 US patents, and has over 75 conference and journal publications. |
