Sophos anti-virus remote update »

** Before installation, please make sure that you do not have other Anti-Virus program already installed. (ie. McAfee, Symantec) **

  1. From the Start menu, select Run and enter: \\kakarot.ics.uci.edu\sophos
    • Login with your ICS Windows Account
      • Username: <ICS Windows username>@ics.uci.edu
      • Password: ICS Windows password

    * If you're not on campus, please connect through Virtual Private Network (VPN) first, then connect to kakarot

  2. Double click on setup.exe
    • Note: You can also copy the entire content of the folder on to another folder on your computer and then run setup.exe

  3. Continue through the setup by clicking on Next until you see the following window. Enter the path you see below (ie. \\kakarot.ics.uci.edu\InterChk\SAVSCFXP\) and enter your ICS Windows username and password.

  4. Proceed through the remaining setup windows to begin the install. When it is complete, you should now see a icon in your system tray. Right-click on it and select Configure updating...

  5. Go under the Primary server tab and verify the information you previously entered during setup.

  6. Go under the Schedule tab and modify the time interval between updates to your liking. This will enable automatic updating but will only work if you are on campus or connected to the VPN when the program tries to update itself.
  7. Right-click on the icon again and click on Update Now
    • If you get an error "Could not contact server" and you're off campus, make sure you are connected to the VPN. If you are, then right-click on the icon in the system tray and select Configure Updating...
    • Click on Primary Server and change kakarot.ics.uci.edu to its IP address: 128.195.18.64

    • Select Update Now again.

  8. Updates usually needs to be performed manually. It is recommended that you do this weekly to obtain the latest virus definitions. Sophos has a new version released each month so, once a month, the update will take longer as a new version needs to be downloaded and installed.
