Wireless network »

Introduction

The ICS / NACS wireless network follows the IEEE 802.11b/g standards. It consists of Cisco access points deployed throughout the four ICS buildings for 100% signal coverage.

Compatibility

When using the ICS / NACS wireless network the user must register their client card using http://www.nacs.uci.edu/ucinet/mobile/registration.html. When connecting to the NACS wireless network, the user must disable authentication (LEAP) and security (dynamic WEP). This will allow the client card to associate with the ICS / NACS wireless network. Then the user must release any IP address associated to the card and make a DHCP request for a new IP address.

Any 802.11b client card can work on the ICS wireless network and the traffic will not be encrypted. The user is responsible for using a secure protocol such as ssh and ssl. If a user desires an encrypted wireless session.

Configuration and Installation

All 802.11b cards:

-SSID: UCInet Mobile Access

  • Note for Windows XP Users: Keri Carpenter has created a webpage and video showing how to set up Windows XP to use the ICS wireless network which you may find helpful. This page can be found here.
