Effective Fall, 2005, Bren School ICS will provide a $1,500 stipend to incoming PhD Students. The stipend check should be distributed by early October. The stipend is intended to assist each student in establishing their graduate career. Specifically, students are expected to come prepared with a computer (preferably a laptop) for ICS graduate course work and research.A list of recommended systems to purchase is outlined below. For students who purchase (or already own) a recommended system, the Bren School Computing Support group will provide up to 1 hour of assistance per incident/issue. Support will be limited to troubleshooting hardware, provided software and connecting to ICS/UCI services. If the problem cannot be resolved after an hour, the student will have to solve the problem themselves. Hardware issues will be directed to the manufacture. If a student decides to purchase/use a different computer not on the recommended list the student will be responsible for any necessary troubleshooting.
As academic sucess depends upon being able to use this tool effectively, each student is responsible for learning to use the laptop both in and out of the "classrooms" at ICS. The laptop is to be used for communicating with faculty, staff, and fellow students, for sharing files, for participating in group discussions, for doing research on the Internet and for completing assignments. Students must avoid altering their laptops in any way that compromises this primary purpose.
