Newsgroups are discussion areas that people can read worldwide. See Newsreaders at ICS for information about some popular newsreaders.There are several hierarchies of newsgroups. Since news places a tremendous load on system resources, the ICS news server does not carry the alt.* hierarchy. For information on how to read these newsgroups, look at Reading the Alt Hierarchy from the Campus News Server (news.service.uci.edu). Two hierarchies which are internal to UCI are ics.* and uci.*.
Important newsgroups
Important groups that you should read:
- ics.system
- Important announcements on system downtime. You are expected to read this since this may affect your ability to login.
- ics.ugrad
- Information related to undergraduates. All undergraduates should read this group.
- ics.grad
- Information related to graduate students. All grad. students should read this group.
