Rebooting UNIX workstations »

How do I reboot my workstation?

If you are the assigned user for that workstation, you can reboot the machine using the program /opt/local/bin/l1a. If you can not run this program, and the machine is on your desk, please contact helpdesk@ics.uci.edu .

What other ways can I reboot my workstation?

None. If you can not use this command, you will have to contact helpdesk@ics.uci.edu to have your workstation rebooted.

What about rebooting using keyboard sequences?

Some people mistakenly think that pressing certain keyboard sequences is an safe way to reboot a workstation. Not only is this unsafe, but it often results in a corrupted disk. When this happens, someone from ICS Support will have to come out and fix the machine before you can use it again. Please don't do this!

I rebooted my system, got the following message, and now I can't login. What should I do?

If you see messages similar to the following on your screen:

WARNING - Unable to repair the /var filesystem. Run fsck
manually (fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s7). Exit the shell
when done to continue the boot process.
or
	INIT: SINGLE USER MODE

Type Ctrl-d to proceed with normal startup,
(or give root password for system maintenance):
       Entering System Maintenance Mode

Please contact helpdesk@ics.uci.edu immediately! Please do not attempt to correct the problem or login yourself. You will damage the workstation.
