Windows printer faq »

Q: How do I access Network or UCI-ICS Domain printers when logged onto my local Windows workstation?

Our print server is not setup to handle non-domain users using our printers. This includes users who are logged onto their local machine rather than the UCI-ICS domain. In order to circumvent this problem, you should connect to the print server as a domain user at the beginning of your session.

If you are using Windows 9x, you need to make sure the WORKGROUP is set to 'UCI-ICS'. Right-click on Network Neighborhood and choose Properties. Click the Identification tab. By default, the WORKGROUP is 'WORKGROUP', which would be incorrect. Change it if necessary.

Next, log into the your computer as:

  • Username: ICS Windows username
  • Password: ICS Windows password

Go to the Start Menu->Run... and type:

\\piccolo

For Windows 9x, a window should pop up with all available printers. If you do not see a printer that you wish to map, email us at helpdesk@ics.uci.edu.

For Windows NT/2000/XP, after you type \\piccolo from the Start Menu->Run... prompt, the system will ask you for a username and password. Follow the following convention:
  • Username: UCI-ICS\<ICS Windows username>
  • Password: ICS Windows password

At this point you should be able to follow the directions here.
