Accessing UNIX in Windows »
To increase the security of our network, the ports that allow you to map your Unix home directory and instructional drop boxes, through an unencrypted off-campus connection, have been blocked. You can still access those resources by downloading and installing Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software. Once connected through the VPN, you can map the shares by following these directions:
Windows 9x or Windows NT/2000/XP.Windows 9x:
- Make sure your machine is connected to the Internet.
- Right-click on Network Neighborhood and choose Properties. Click the Identification tab and make sure the WORKGROUP field is 'UCI-ICS'. By default, the WORKGROUP is 'WORKGROUP', which would be incorrect.
- Next, log into your computer with:
- Username: ICS Windows username
- Password: ICS Windows password
- Right click on "My Computer" and select "Map Network Drive".
- For most users, you will map your home directory through DATA.
- \\data.ics.uci.edu\user_name
- If you have difficulty it may be necessary to use IP addresses instead of hostnames. This is usually because there is an error in your computer's DNS configuration.
- \\128.195.21.20\user_name
- If your home directory is not located on DATA or you are mapping a group account, then you should use TROLL.
- \\troll.ics.uci.edu\user_name
- \\128.195.18.60\user_name
- You will be prompted for a password as soon as the connection is established if you did not enter a password as explained above or entered the wrong password. Remember to respond with your ICS Windows Password and NOT your Unix password.
Windows NT/2000/XP:
- Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
- Right click on "My Computer" and select "Map Network Drive"
- For most users, you will map your home directory through DATA.
- \\data.ics.uci.edu\user_name
- If you have difficulty connecting, it may be necessary to use IP addresses instead of hostnames. This is usually because there is an error in your computer's DNS configuration.
- \\128.195.21.20\user_name
- If your home directory is not located on DATA or you are mapping a group account, then you should use TROLL.
- \\troll.ics.uci.edu\user_name
- \\128.195.18.60\user_name
- For Windows 2000/XP, click on "different user name" to bring up a window to enter your username and password.
- Username: UCI-ICS\<ICS Windows username>.
- Password: ICS Windows Password.
- If you are using Windows NT, type the username in the space "Connect As" and click OK. The computer should prompt you for a password.
