Sophos anti-virus configuration »

Checking Sophos Configuration

To check the settings Sophos has been configured with, select "Sophos Anti-Virus" under Start Menu->Programs->Sophos Anti-Virus.

The window that appears should look like the one above with 3 tabs with the words "Immediate", "Scheduled", and "IC Client". Depending on which tab is currently selected, choosing Options->Configuration... from the menu bar will show the configuration option for that specific mode.

Immediate Mode

Below is the configuration window for the Immediate mode if you clicked on the "Immediate" tab and then selected 'Options->Configuration...':

The Immediate mode is used when you wish to scan for viruses on demand. If you wish to start an immediate scan, click on the Immediate tab and then the "GO" button.

Scheduled Mode

The Scheduled mode allows you to run scans at specified times of the week. Upon initial installation, it is set to run a full scan Monday thru Friday at 11pm. If you wish to change that schedule, click on the "Scheduled" tab and then click on the "Edit" button.

IC Client Mode

The IC Client mode is the on-access component of Sophos. Each time a file is opened and read, this component checks to make sure the file is not infected.

Look at the tab and make sure that there is a green circle next to the word "IC Client". This means that the on-access scan is active. If there is a red dot instead, click on the "IC Client" tab and then click on the "GO" button to activate it. Now the arrows should be spinning and the status should say "Active".

Updating Sophos and its Virus Identification Files

The anti-virus program has been configured to check for updates from the server daily. Whenever an update is needed, Sophos will reinstall itself automatically. Do not be alarmed if the following window appears on your desktop.

You have the option to postpone the update a maximum of 5 times. The update process should only take a few minutes to run.

Dealing with Infected Files

There are times when Sophos will have a false positive. That is, a file is detected to be infected when in fact it it not. To prevent accidental deletion of files by the anti-virus program, Sophos has been configured to first try to disinfect the file. If it is unable to clean the file, it will move the file to a different folder and notify ICS Support of the possible infected file. However, if you wish to change the configuration to delete the file, please go into the configuration window for the mode you wish to change as described above. The option you want to change is under the "Action" in the configuration menu.
