Junior Specialist PositionThe Department and Computer Science in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences anticipates one or more part-time Junior Specialist positions to become available in the general area of programming languages and compilers. This position is particularly well suited for an individual who is planning to apply to a Ph.D. program for next Fall and wants to gain a head start on research now.
Work will be primarily focused on language-based security, virtual machines, and on dynamic compilation. Appointment will be on a month-to-month basis. The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and demonstrated familiarity with virtual machines and just-in-time compilers. Salary to be at a 50% appointment, between $16,836-$17,952 when calculated on an annual basis.

Post Doctoral Scholar PositionThe Department of Computer Science at UC Irvine has a postdoctoral position available in the area of machine learning and computational vision. The postdoc will be supervised by Professor Max Welling.
The project is a part of a collaboration between the computer science dept. at UCI (Prof. M. Welling), the mathematics dept. at UCI (Prof. J. Lowengrub & prof. N. Komorova) and the biology dept. at UCI (Prof. D. Wodarz and Prof. E. Lee). The research challenges involve the development of new computer vision models and machine learning algorithms for recognizing, tracking and classifying image-data of real and simulated tumor growth.
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a closely-related discipline.
The salary range for these positions will be between $45,000 and $60,000 annually, commensurate with training and experience. The earliest date for appointment will be November 1, 2009. The appointment will initially be for a one-year period but is expected to be extended to an additional year.

POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR POSITION

The Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences has a full-time position available for a Postdoctoral Scholar.This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Economics, Public Policy, or a related area. The position entails performing research in Internet policy, including net neutrality and traffic management. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation; the goal is to propose an interdisciplinary approach to update the Internet architectural principles to account for telecommunications policy and economics.
Candidates should have a research record in computer networks, in the application of economics to information technology, or in communications public policy. Candidates should be interested in interdisciplinary research in computer science, economics, and public policy.
In the course of the research and under the direction of the principal investigator, the postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for individual and collaborative research and for further developing the research program. The initial appointment will be for one year, with a possible extension to two or three years dependent in part on progress.

Assistant Project Scientist Position
The Department of Informatics in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences has a full-time position available for an Assistant Project Scientist. This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or Information Science or a related area.
The position involves performing research in the social and technical organization of information management. The research involves both field work and development of prototype technologies. A background in activity-based computing systems, interface design and social science research methods would be desirable.
The position is year-round, full-time, starting in September or October of 2009. The position is available for one year, and there may be a possibility to extend this to a second year. The salary for this position will be $75,000.

Postdoctoral Scholar PositionThe Department of Computer Science and Institute for Bioinformatics and Genomics anticipate two full-time Post-doctoral Scholar positions to become available in the general area of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
Work will be on developing bioinformatics and computational methods to analyze genomes, using comparative genomics, systems biology, probabilistic modeling, or other data mining methods.
Appointment will be initially for a one year period, with the possibility of extension to two or three years depending on progress.
The positions require a Ph.D. degree in a quantitative field such as computational biology, computer science, physics, mathematics, or other related field, and have prior experience with bioinformatics and computational biology. Strong computational skills are required.
Advantageous characteristics include experience in comparative genomics, systems biology, and machine learning.
The salary range for this position will be $41,496-$61,080 annually and the appointment salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.

Post Doctoral Scholar Position
University of California, IrvineThe Department of Computer Science at UC Irvine has a postdoctoral position available in the area of machine learning and computational vision. The position is part of an ONR-funded collaboration between Professor Max Welling’s research group at UCI (department of Computer Science) and Professor Pietro Perona’s research group at Caltech (department of engineering). The postdoc is expected to spend at least one day a week at Caltech on average.
Responsibilities will include the development of new algorithms for learning hierarchical models for visual object categories. The approach will focus on the following three aspects of this problem: I) developing probabilistic models for visual object categories in image data, II) developing learning algorithms that can automatically grow in complexity in response to new data, III) developing efficient learning and inference algorithms that scale to large datasets.
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a closely-related discipline.
The salary range for these positions will be between $48,000 and $60,000 annually, commensurate with training and experience. The earliest date for appointment will be September 1, 2009. Assistant Adjunct Professor PositionThe Department of Computer Science at UC Irvine invites applications for an Adjunct Assistant Professor position. Applicants will be considered at the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor.
The appointment will be initially at 50 percent time, but may become 100 percent depending on available funding. Position is dependent on extramural funding. Initial appointment is for one year. Renewal is based on performance and availability of support. The applicant will be associated with the Center for Emergency Response technologies and projects associated with the Center.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent and must have at least 5 years of experience in a research and/or academic position.
We are particularly interested in candidates with strong research expertise and interests in areas of data management, data mining, graph analysis, and probabilistic reasoning and specifically knowledge of the recent disambiguation and data cleaning techniques, as well as deep knowledge of spatio-temporal database, and techniques for dealing with uncertainty in databases. The applicant must be willing to apply such techniques to areas related to crisis response and situational awareness.
The candidates are expected to demonstrate (1) a strong track record of research accomplishments through several peer-reviewed publications in the area(s) of interest. (2) Willingness to work with a large multidisciplinary team in designing innovative solutions towards building large event-oriented data management systems, (3) willingness to work with end-users in developing deployable technologies that are an outcome of the research.
Experience in activities such as leading R&D projects, pursuing research funding opportunities from national funding agencies, and supervision of graduate students are strongly desirable.
Experience managing large teams of researchers, programmers, and graduate students is also desirable. The candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
The applicant must be able to teach courses in the areas of databases, information retrieval, and information quality.
