Computer User Support Associate Specialist

The Department of Informatics at the University of California Irvine anticipates a Computer User Support Associate Specialist position available July 1, 2013. The selected candidate will be expected to assist the set of people in what is called the Hana Lab to conduct their research, much of which involves using computers and various applications.

The position is to assist people doing research on how distributed teams collaborate through various kinds of technologies, like IM, chat, email, video conferencing, etc. The primary responsibility of this person would be to oversee the use of a behavioral research laboratory, a suite of 6 rooms that can be used to video and audio record studies in which researchers are exploring people’s behavior individually and in groups. This person will support faculty and students in how to use the facility and on occasion help them run their studies. In addition, this person would maintain, schedule, and monitor the use of the equipment associated with the laboratory, including 12 Windows 7 laptops with various software installed and a portable video-conferencing system on a cart. Other related duties include assisting in behavioral studies by supporting researchers in the design, development, and delivery of a special piece of software for people’s online assessment of their collaboration practices. Applicants are expected to have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or a related field.

The salary for this position is $49,824/year. The initial appointment will be for a three-year period, with extensions for further years dependent in part on the availability of funding.

Postdoctoral Scholar Position

The Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences has a full-time position available for a Postdoctoral Scholar.

This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Economics, Public Policy, or a related area. The position entails performing research in Internet policy, including net neutrality and traffic management. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation; the goal is to use an interdisciplinary approach that integrates network architecture, economics, and law to analyze Internet Service Provider offerings and practices, consider how communications law may affect deployment of tiers and offerings, and illustrate potential technical and economics arrangements that could enable more widespread deployment of Quality of Service practices.

Candidates should have a research record in computer networks, in the application of economics to information technology, or in communications public policy. Candidates should be interested in interdisciplinary research in computer science, economics, and public policy.

In the course of the research and under the direction of the principal investigator, the postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for individual and collaborative research and for further developing the research program. The initial appointment will be for one year, with a possible extension for a second year dependent in part on progress.

The salary for this position will be between $39,264 and $60,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus all standard benefits for University of California Postdoctoral Scholars.
