Junior Specialist Position

The Department of Informatics anticipates a part-time junior specialist research position available in Values in the Design of Information Systems and Technology Laboratory in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. Applicants will be expected to act as systems administrator for the laboratory, help crafting funding applications, be administrative organizer for workshops and work on research projects in co-ordination with the lab director.

This will be a two year 12 month appointment. Qualifications include: strong background in informatics, proven track record in values in design research broadly construed and research experience. Applicants must have an iSchool Masters degree or equivalent. Salary will be about $1,910.84 per month at 62 % time, based on an annual salary rate of $36,984.

Assistant Project Scientist Position

The Department of Informatics in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences has a full-time position available for an Assistant Project Scientist. This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Centered Computing, or related area. The position is in the Software Design and Collaboration Laboratory (sdcl.ics.uci.edu), and involves performing research in human-centered software engineering, with a particular emphasis on software design, collaborative software development, development environments, and education.

Work to be performed includes the design, development, and evaluation of innovative software development technologies, writing publications and presenting at conferences, working with a team of graduate and undergraduate students, identifying and following through on new grant opportunities, and other aspects of academic scholarship. It is anticipated that a balance will be struck between these activities and the research agenda of the assistant project scientist themselves.

Candidates should have a strong background in (human-centered) software engineering, with an established track record of publishing in key conferences and workshops, as well as familiarity and ideally experience with empirical studies, both in the field and in the lab. Past involvement in grant writing would be a plus.

The salary for this position is $65,100 a year. The initial appointment will be for one year, with extensions for further years dependent in part on the availability of funding. Anticipated date of appointment is January 1, 2012.

Associate Specialist Position
Part-time; salary at 25-50% time based on annual salary of $48,372-$58,224 per year.

The Department of Informatics in the School of Information and Computer Sciences at UC Irvine currently offers an Associate Specialist position in the area of ubiquitous computing. The candidate will be responsible for working with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars on a variety of ubiquitous computing projects.

The successful candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  1. Have at least ten years of experience with capture and access applications and context-aware systems.
  2. Have published extensively (at least five papers per venue) in CHI, Ubicomp, and IEEE Pervasive.
  3. Have demonstrated the ability to lead substantial research efforts in ubiquitous computing, human-computer interaction, and assistive technologies.
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor graduate students.
  5. Possess solid knowledge of development for the Android and other mobile phone platforms.
  6. Proficiency in computer programming (Java and C++).
  7. Must speak fluent Vietnamese and English.

In addition to the qualifications, the position requires a Ph.D. degree in computer science with an emphasis on human-computer interaction.

Assistant Specialist Position
Salary: Full time $38,952-$44,400 commensurate with experience

The Department of Informatics in the School of Information and Computer Sciences at UC Irvine currently offers an Assistant Specialist position in the area of technologies for autism. The candidate will be responsible for developing assistive technologies, ubiquitous computing solutions, and collaborative systems in support of children with autism at home and at school. The candidate will also be responsible for assisting with research studies focused on both the design and evaluation of these technologies.

The successful candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  1. Have a MS degree in Informatics or a related discipline.
  2. Have at least three years of experience with technologies for autism.
  3. Have published in both HCI and Autism Research venues on projects related to technologies for autism.
  4. Have demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team as well as to lead research in autism and technology.
  5. Experience in teaching students with autism to use technologies both at the elementary and high school levels.
  6. Possess solid knowledge of development for the Android and other mobile phone platforms.
  7. Proficiency in computer programming (Java and C++).

Secure Systems and Languages Laboratory (Prof. Michael Franz)
Postdoctoral Scholar Position

UCI's Secure Systems and Languages Laboratory, led by Prof. Franz have been at the forefront of research in dynamic compilation and language based security. Our research has had substantial impact. For example, the trace compilation technology behind the TraceMonkey JavaScript compiler that is build into Mozilla's Firefox browser originated in our lab.

We anticipate the one or more full-time Post-doctoral Scholar positions will become availabrle soon and are looking for capable candidates to join our team. Appointments will be initially for a one year period and will be renewable. These positions require a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and demonstrated expertise, at the highest level, in the area of compiler construction. The ideal candidate would already have at least one publication in a top conference such as PLDI or CGO, or in a top journal such as TOPLAS.

Current graduate students who fulfill all other requirements but who have not quite yet completed their Ph.Ds. are welcome to apply; however, any offer will be made contingent on successful completion of the degree.

Salary to be between $38,496-$80,880 annually, depending on experience and qualification. Candidates without experience in the area of compilers are not encouraged to apply.

Postdoctoral Scholar Position

The Department of Computer Science at UC Irvine has a full-time postdoctoral scholar position available in the area of statistical machine learning. Responsibilities will include conducting basic research on new statistical learning algorithms for modeling complex data sets, including text data, relational/network data, and temporal data. Further responsibilities include research presentations and technical writing, as well as collaborating with graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty in the department. The successful applicant will be advised by Professor Padhraic Smyth in the Department of Computer Science.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely-related discipline. Applicants should have strong research experience and publications in machine learning and/or statistics and broad knowledge of computational statistical methods is required. The ability to develop algorithms in computational environments such as MATLAB or R is also required.

The salary range for these positions will be between $45,000 and $62,000 annually, commensurate with training and experience. The appointments will each initially be for a one-year period with extensions to additional years possible subject to availability of funding. Earliest date of appointment is July 1st 2011.
