Seven Steps to Application Success

1. Fill out an online application

Online applications are accepted from October 1 to January 15. ICS only accepts applications for the Fall quarter.

If you have already applied, please ensure that all your materials (i.e. personal statement, transcript, letters of recommendation and GRE scores) are submitted before the January 15th deadline.

On the online application, enter the appropriate codes for ICS:

  • Arts Computation Engineering M.S.
  • Computer Science, Ph.D.
  • Computer Science, M.S.
  • Information and Computer Science M.S.
  • Information and Computer Science Ph.D.
  • Networked Systems M.S.
  • Networked Systems Ph.D.
  • Statistics, M.S.
  • Statistics, Ph.D.

Choose M.S, or Ph.D. ICS does not have a M.S./Ph.D. program.

Enter a Specific Area of Interest. You should list the areas you are interested in. For more information about a particular research area, please see the research area page.

Upon completing the form, press the submit button, which prompts you to pay the $60 application fee (domestic students) or $80 (international students). Payment options include Visa or MasterCard, or a check or money order, payable to "UC Regents," and mailed to:

Applications will not be processed without payment. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS AND NO FEE WAIVERS.

After submitting your application fee, you have officially applied and should receive an email confirmation.

Please remeber your application ID number, as it will be asked of you when filling out the housing application and other documents.

2. Send Personal Statement

Note: Personal Statement (same as Statement of Purpose) may be submitted via the online application.


3. Send three letters of recommendation

Provide Letter of Recommendation and Waiver of Access forms to the three people you have identified who can evaluate your academic and professional achievement, describe your strengths and weaknesses and comment on your character, integrity and motivation.

These should be mailed from your recommenders directly to:

Letters of recommendation may also be submitted online.

Applicants who have completed and submitted their online application may send their recommenders a link to this page, as well as their application ID number.


4. Send GRE and TOEFL* scores

Arrange to have your test scores sent to the Office of Graduate Studies. The Computer Science Subject GRE is recommended if you do not have a degree in Computer Science or any related field.

5. Send Transcripts

Arrange to have two copies of your official transcript from the colleges you attended sent directly to the Graduate Office at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. Official English translation is required from international students.


6. Checking application status

The ICS Graduate Office cannot inform you of your application status over the phone or by email.

Applicants may login to the online GATS TRACKER to check for application materials received and their current application status.


7. Decision

Ph.D. & M.S. decisions are ongoing, acceptance or denial letters will be sent electronically.
