The five majors allow students to cover the vast spectrum of topics that constitute the subject of computer science.

At one end is the design of computer systems, with a focus on obtaining high performance with limited cost, size and power usage. At the other end are a variety of human issues, such as how computers facilitate cooperative work among groups of people.

As the field continues to diversify, so do the Bren School offerings for undergraduate study. As illustrated below, the five different majors can be viewed as focusing on different aspects in the spectrum of topics in Information and Computer Science:

Regardless of which major a student chooses, they will experience fundamental courses in computer science, supplemented by a breadth of courses from other academic disciplines.

The curriculum is particularly flexible, allowing students to explore particular information and computer science topics in depth or to explore areas in which these technologies are applied. Some students minor in areas such as: mathematics, management, digital arts or linguistics.

A premium is placed on communication and analytic skills. Students start early with hands-on experience with advanced computing systems, and intense use of computer and network technologies continues throughout the program.

Students work with state-of-the-art hardware and software technologies, learn several contemporary programming languages, and make extensive use of distributed learning environments, virtual worlds and collaborative games.
