The importance of role models for people early in their careers is undisputed. At the Bren School, the Dean, Associate Dean and one of three department chairs are women.

In the School’s Computer Science Department and Informatics Department, 14 out of 60 professors are women – nearly 25%.

For comparison, the nationwide average percentage of female faculty in computer science departments is 12%.

Diversity in the student body and faculty are important ingredients for enriching classroom experiences and discussions.

Likewise, making efforts to explore diverse experiences through club participation, study abroad, and internship opportunities will help expand the breadth and depth of what a student is learning in the classroom.

Many resources are available to students at the Bren School and across campus. Those within the Bren School include:

Bren:ICS is an active partner of the National Center for Women & Information Technology, whose overarching goal is parity in the professional information technology (IT) workforce.

UC Irvine is an official member of MentorNet, made possible by a collaboration of the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, and School of Physical Sciences. Bren School undergraduate and graduate students are invited to sign up as a protégé for one-on-one mentoring through MentorNet.

MentorNet's One-on-One Mentoring Programs will pair students with a professional in an academic, industry or government setting who is willing to share "real world" experience, encouragement, advice, and access via one-on-one, email-based mentoring.

The Women in Information and Computer Sciences (WICS) club is an organization that was established to help and encourage women to pursue a college degree and a successful career in the computer science field.

WICS works together with a common ambition: to meet, encourage and help each other succeed and gain equal opportunity for women in a challenging field.
