Bren School students aren’t just students. They want to shape their careers and society. Their entrepreneurial spirit shows up in many ways:
» Every year students form teams to compete in the Bren School’s hITEC OCTANe contest (formerly Exterme Computing), a product development competition with $9,000 or more in prizes.
Past winning product ideas include:
NavSense - A traffic-aware, in-vehicle navigation system designed to provide drivers with routes that avoid road hazards and heavily congested areas.
Web Usability Analyzer - Enables web site owners to economically assess the usability of their Website.
e-books - A platform that facilitates and enables the up-and-coming market of electronic textbook sales and distribution.
The top three product development teams in hITEC OCTANe automatically qualify for The Paul Merage School of Business’s annual Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth Business Plan Competition with cash awards totaling $30,000.
» Four female undergraduates designed and wrote a computer game that took second place in the national 2006 Games4Girls contest.
Other groups of students enter contests annually, such as the Association for Computing Machinery Collegiate Programming Contest and the Information Technology Competition.
» Every year, a few groups of students launch a new start-up company to apply their innovative spirit to networking, gaming, medical information systems, internet technology, or some other area.
To prepare, students may choose to enroll in the Entrepreneurship course taught by Bren Professor Ramesh Jain, who has founded three highly successful companies himself.
» In 2004 and 2005, a team of students, XTREME ANTEATER RACING, developed an autonomous vehicle to compete in the United States Defense Department’s DARPA Grand Challenge.
