What Do We Want to See

Transferring in to a Bren School major is a two step process. The first step is meeting the University requirements.

The University considers a transfer applicant as a student who has completed high school and who has been a registered student in a regular session of a college or university.

Students who meet this definition cannot disregard their college record and apply as freshmen.

To be considered as a California community college transfer applicant to UCI, a student must have completed at least 30 semester units (45 quarter units) at one or more California community colleges.

If you are unsure whether or not you are eligible to transfer in to UC Irvine, please consult the UC Eligibility Requirements of the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools.

Tip While UC Irvine does request that you submit academic information from your high school, we rely more heavily on your academic progress at your college/university to determine your readiness for transferring. This will allow students who did not perform well in high school can to demonstrate their academic readiness and not be heavily penalized for their high school work.

The second step in transferring in as a Bren School major is meeting the requirements of our school.

We require that transfer students come in with 1 year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of computer science courses, one of which must involve a high level, object oriented programming language such as C++ or Java.

We also require 1 year of college math in Calculus, Discrete Math, Boolean Algebra or Linear Algebra.

Once You're Admitted

Once you're admitted to UC Irvine, things will start to move very quickly.

It can be hard to keep deadlines and requirements straight, especially if you've been accepted to more that one school.

Please use this site as a map to achieving a smooth transition between community college and UC Irvine.

IGETC

While not required in order to transfer to UC Irvine, completing IGETC at your community college can give you a great head start on your courses.

Completing IGETC will mean that all your General Education courses will be completed upon entering UC Irvine, with the exception of 1 Upper Division writing course.

Please note that the counselors at your community college are the experts on IGETC, so you should consult them for planning. Also, you MUST complete all of the IGETC requirements BEFORE beginning courses at UC Irvine. You are not allowed to go back and finish IGETC afterwards.

SMART-ICS

Some community colleges have worked to set up a SMART ICS agreement with the Bren School. For these schools, it is possible to take care of all the lower division ICS and Math courses for some of our majors by completing a list of courses at the community college.

The community colleges that currently have SMART ICS Agreements are:

- Orange Coast College
- Fullerton College
- Long Beach City College

If you have any questions about the SMART ICS agreements, please consult your community college counselors or the Bren School Student Affairs Office at (949) 824-5156 or ucounsel@uci.edu.

Majors

The Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences is unique to the UC system as well as most Computer Science programs in the United States.

Though our field is growing and ever changing, most institutions have Computer Science as a department under the school or college of Engineering. At UC Irvine, our program has become an independent school, meaning that we have all the resources and abilities of a school at our disposal.

This has allowed us to not only extend the scope of the education we offer, but to also develop more specialized and interdisciplinary majors. For more information about our majors, please visit the Bren School majors page.

Tip If you're still unsure which major to pursue after you research them, check out the major advisor.

Internal Transfers

As mentioned earlier, transferring in to the Bren School requires completing both general UC Irvine requirements and as well specific Bren School requirements.

The admissions process works in a similar manner. While you only need to worry about turning in your application through the Office of Admissions, the application will need to be reviewed by both Admissions and academic counselors in the Bren School.

It is possible to be admitted in to UC Irvine but not in to your major of choice. In these cases, you would be put in to a major you are eligible for and would need to work towards the change of major requirements to get where you would like to be.

Make sure to find out if your intended major is impacted before accepting you admittance by contacting an academic counselor at (949) 824-5156 or ucounsel@uci.edu.

Please visit this web site for a link to the application and more information.

Tip Certain documents (like high school transcripts and standardized score reports) can be hard to come by for students who are long removed from these environments. We highly encourage students in this situation to contact these respective institutions very early on in their transfer process to secure these hard to find documents in time for our application deadlines.
