Bren ICS welcomes all new incoming freshmen and transfer students! In preparation for a successful start to your first quarter, the campus hosts Welcome Week 2009.

Depending on your major, your attendance at some of the events listed below is mandatory or strongly encouraged. Plan to attend these and other Welcome Week events to learn about helpful campus resources, hear about others’ strategies for a successful transition, and meet other students and even some of your professors.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21

    UCI Chancellor Drake's Welcome/Convocation Address to New Students

  • 10:30 a.m. to noon
    Bren ICS Dean's Welcome for New Freshmen and Transfer Students (MANDATORY)
    Rowland Hall 101
    Dean Debra Richardson, Associate Dean André van der Hoek and student leaders will share important information for a successful start to your Bren ICS experience. You'll also learn some interesting and funny facts about your fellow students, and hear about ways to get involved in student organization activities and service efforts.

    All new and continuing students are welcome to visit the many booths and information tables sponsored by campus departments and student clubs.

    Open Information Session on the Informatics Major

    Learn about Informatics---the technical major with an interdisciplinary approach. Informatics focuses on designing information technology systems that work effectively in the real world, considering their human users and the organizations in which they work and live. The major includes specializations in Human-Computer Interaction, Software Engineering, and Organizations and Information Technology; there is also an Informatics minor. All UCI students are welcome.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23

    Welcome and Orientation for New Undergrads in Informatics (REQUIRED)

    All new freshmen and transfer students in the Informatics major are required to attend. Every student enrolled in Informatics 41, including majors in Business Information Management, students taking Informatics 41 for General Education, or students considering the Informatics major, is welcome and encouraged to attend. Informatics students and faculty will present information about the major, the courses, and the field. Hosted by Bren School’s Informatics Department; please RSVP to Sabina Chung (sabinac@uci.edu, (949) 824-0247).

    Getting the Most from First-Year Courses in ICS (ICS/CSE 21/22/23, ICS H21/H22/H23, Informatics 41/42/43)

    Hear the instructors who teach these courses and students who have taken them give their perspectives on what to expect and how to thrive in first-year computing classes: ICS/CSE 21/22/23, ICS H21/H22/H23, Informatics 41/42/43.
    You are welcome to attend if you are a new freshman or transfer student enrolled in or considering any of these classes, or if you are majoring in (or considering a major in) Biomedical Computing, Business Information Management, Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Informatics, or Information and Computer Science. Light refreshments will be served.
