PLACEMENT EXAM INFO FOR COMPUTER GAME SCIENCE MAJORS

NOTE: You must take these exams and receive the results at least 10 days prior to your orientation date.  If you do not have your exam results by your orientation date, you will not be able to register for (some) classes. 

*Please be aware that it takes approximately 2-3 weeks to receive the results for the Analytical Writing exam.

1. Analytical Writing exam may be required

2. Academic English exam may be required

3. Math/ Calculus exam may be required

4. Physics (MAPP) exam NOT required

5. ICS 31/CSE 41 credit by exam optional, but HIGHLY recommended


EXEMPTIONS

1. You are exempt from taking the ANALYTICAL WRITING placement exam only if you have satisfied any of the following:

  • 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts; or
  • 30 or better on the ACT, Combined English/Writing (last administered June 2015); or
  • 3 or above on either Advanced Placement Examination in English; or
  • 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Literature exam (formerly known as Higher Level English A1 exam); or
  • 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Literature exam (formerly known as Standard Level English A1 exam); or
  • 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  • 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  • Completed an acceptable one-quarter (three-unit) course in English composition with a grade of “C” or better at another college or university, or via UCI Summer Session. 2. You may be required to take the ACADEMIC ENGLISH placement exam, if instructed by the UCI Testing Center office.  If instructed to take the Academic English exam, you must take it AFTER the Analytical Writing exam.

3. You are exempt from taking the MATH/CALCULUS (ALEKS) placement exam only if you have satisfied any of the following:

  • 3 or higher on the College Board AP Calculus AB exam; or
  • 3 or higher on the College Board AP Calculus BC exam; or
  • 650 or higher on the Mathematics section of the SAT; or
  • 29 or higher (composite score) on the Mathematics section of the ACT

Note: If you have taken the AP Calculus exam, but have not yet received your results, it is highly recommended that you take the Calculus placement exam

4. You are NOT required to take the Physics (MAPP) placement exam.  Only Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) majors must take the exam.
