of the Educational Technology Center

NOTE: this local web is reasonably current as of July 1994.
But there is no guarantee of its maintenance as the Center's circumstances change.

These archives are an accumulation of documents from virtually all areas of work at the Center, since 1984 or 85. They are intended to include the most important documents, prominent among them the programmer's reference manuals to the Center's library of Pascal C.A.I. dialogue support units; but also documents intended for at least:

programmers coding the human-computer dialogues (historically, undergraduate coders);
project senior staff analysing future software development requirements;
programmer(s) maintaining units of the dialogue support library;
managers/coordinators of the Center's development microcomputer lab;
maintainer(s) of the Center's PC-NFS subnet;
colleagues and friends worldwide interested in collaborating in and building on the Center's existing work, especially the Centre Universitaire d'Informatique (CUI) of the University of Geneva, and in particular our long-time friends Prof. Bernard Levrat and Bertrand Ibrahim.

Although it will certainly be found to need much re-organisation and refinement, it is hoped this local web will help pull together and preserve at least part of the great contributions which any number of people have made over more than a decade to the Center's and Professor Bork's goals of using technology to rebuild and restore education.

The support library for programmers coding dialogues

Those not familiar with the orientations and goals of this library, or its significance in the Center's work on CAI systems, should consult Support Software for Computer-Based Learning Materials by A. Chioccariello, S. Franklin, and A. Bork.

"Chronicles" of major subjects

Actually, nothing so organised. These are simply compilations of electronic mail exchanges on various major subjects, accumulated originally in Milne's mail folders. It is hoped they may give a cross-section of their histories in a way organised documentation could not, in the time available. However, considerable searching may be necessary for the reader seeking some particular item. Perhaps future efforts will make them tidier, more accessible, and cull down the degree of "noise".

Documents for users of dialogues (students, teachers, etc.)

boot-userguide.tex, intended for release discs of the Annenberg-CPB pre-calculus project. Its publishable version looks like this.

Miscellaneous collected documents

RS232.doc.Z, an unofficial but detailed description of the functionalities of the pins, and therefore of the wires attached to each pin, in a serial transmission cable conforming to the RS-232C standard. This is an exceedingly common type of cable for modems and for some printers.

This directory contains the roots of this local web. It may be useful for those who need to circumvent the organisation imposed above; and it will make accessible any new additions not yet included as part of the web.

For a number of the files here whose names lack a special extension, a second file will be seen that adds ".txt" to the name. This is a symbolic link to the true file to cause WWW viewers to display it the true file as plain text. The reader will therefore usually want to look at these links rather than the original.
