Educational Technology Center
Visitor's Demonstration Area

Alastair Milne
May 1994

Machines set up for demonstration are almost always available in the demonstration area of the Center's lab to demonstrate some of the Center's recent major projects. The area is currently in the Conference and Design Room of the lab, at the opposite end from the Main Coding Room.

Systems for the following projects are set up:

Understanding Spoken Japanese (stage 3) - I:
How to run the demonstrations, with a section for Understanding Spoken Japanese (I and II), will be found posted on the wall or lying on the desk next to the demo machines.
This program is available on both PS/2 model 55SX's, under C:\USJ-I\.
Videodiscs for all the modules are found between the 2 stations.
All components (PS/2, videodisc player, and monitor) must be switched on individually. Switching on the player first will probably give smoother initialisation.
Uses the Sony LDP-2000 videodisc player on one PS/2, the Pioneer 4200 on the other. Altering these will require changes in the configuration of M-Control, done through MCONFIG.
NOTE: Although M-Motion v 2.10 has been installed on at least one of the model 55's, its compatibility with the current multimedia support for USJ is in question, so we continue to use M-Motion v 1.00 .
Understanding Spoken Japanese (stage 3) - II:
The instructions' section on how to run Understanding Spoken Japanese (I and II) will be found posted on the wall or lying on the desk next to the demo machines.
Available on both PS/2 model 55SX's, under C:\USJ-II\.
Otherwise, the same as above.
the Scientific Reasoning Series, v 1.10
The instructions' section on how to run the Scientific Reasoning Series will be found posted on the wall or lying on the desk next to the demo machines.
Available on both PS/2 model 55SX's, under C:\DEMOS\.
Neither multimedia gear nor the mouse apply to SRS, except for the problem-solving note in the posted usage guide.
Understanding Spoken Japanese (prototype stage)
Runs on the Fujitsu FM-16 sitting on the blue-and-white desk-like station. The power switches on all the gear should be left in "on" position; the whole collection is then switched on by the master power switch behind the panel on the front of the blue face of the station. (This is because most of or all the gear is Japanese and requires 100 volts, so it's plugged into a transformer contained in the rear of the station.)
The 5.25" floppies containing the 2 "halves" of the USJ prototype are in a box to the left of the station. The videodiscs are found further behind the floppies.
The FM-16 itself sits atop the videodisc player on the left side of the station. Place one of the USJ floppies in its top drive, and switch the whole system on. If a change of floppy discs is needed, the software will direct you.
HINT: There are points at which, having directed you to change the videodisc, the software prompts for action when the videodisc is "ready": readiness can be told by waiting for the screen to make a sudden "flicker", as the restarting videodisc player comes back on line.
NOTE: Although a hard disc is attached, the demonstration form of the prototype is not contained on it.

Floppy discs with older demos

These discs are available on the top shelves in the Secondary Coding room. They provide demos of at least: (The shelf also includes maintenance discs from other projects, so demonstrators are advised to be careful of their selection!)

Papers for Distribution

Visitors are welcome to copies of various papers Center personnel have published on their or the Center's work. A rack of copies of 3 such papers can be found next to the FM-16 demonstration station.
