It provides a few services: 1. It allows Dataswitch-connected (and dial-in) terminals and PCs to interact with UCInet-connected computers and workstations by entering the command "Connect" followed by the Internet name for the computer or workstation after requesting UCINET at the Dataswitch's "Request:" prompt. For example: UCInet> CONNECT MYSUN.ENG.UCI.EDU This is particularly useful if you have a workstation in your office and a terminal at home. 2. It allows Dataswitch-connected terminals and PCs to interact with off-campus hosts that are in the Internet (the combined network formed by NSFnet, Arpanet, MILnet, and a few others). For example, UCInet> C A.SDSC.EDU will connect you to the Cray at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. 3. It allows UCInet-connected hosts to access Dataswitch-connected hosts (and dial-out modems) through the use of the telnet protocol. For example, if you have a Unix workstation or a VMS system TCP/IP software such as Tek/CMU, you would type: % telnet ds.uci.edu then "RS" to request a Dataswitch-connected system. Please feel free to use this service. If you have any questions about it, please contact Mike Slagley (MSlagley@uci, x5158) or me (DHWalker@uci, x7037). As usual, problems that may occur should be reported to the Computing Facility operator (x6530, x6065). ================================================== Sender: franklin@orion.CF.UCI.EDU
