The critical activity in our success or failure of distance learning institutions, of a wide variety of different types, is the question of how the courses are produced. Students are much more dependent on the curriculum material than they are in the standard environment, because there is no ''teacher'' that one can be in contact with. Learning for distant students must depend primarily either on the student or on the curriculum materials. So the quality of the curriculum materials is a major issue in distance learning. Interaction demands careful production.
