Combinations

In many situations the two possibilities with interactive technology just discussed, networks and personal computers, will be combined, with some activity from each of the two directions indicated. It is this strategy that would appear to have the greatest potential for the future, if the major focus is on highly interactive material.

For example suppose that much of the learning material is in highly individualize multimedia computer based learning modules. Communication over networks can still be an important part of the process, as in the following cases.

Perhaps the programs themselves will alert people at the institution when someone needs human attention, beyond that available in the computer learning material. As with certain kinds of mail systems today the question of when one is connected with the remote host, and when one is not, can be taken care of entirely by the program, without the student being burdened with knowing about additional software and hardware for this purpose.

Another important addition to individualized computer based learning material, is the ability to talk to other students with similar problems and difficulties. Sometimes this can be arranged locally, simply by putting together students in a given area, since the remote system knows they are studying the same thing. One can also establish electronic connections between people who are remote, allowing them to discuss the material they are learning.

In the next section we examine interaction from the standpoint of the media involved.
