There are several companies which rent Suns. I imagine that they would lease them as well. However, the pricing is oriented towards the typical short-term need, such as equipping a trade show in a remote city. I think you'll find that you could have bought the equipment (at our discount level, we pay less than the rental company to buy the equipment) if you rent it for more than a couple of months. If you'd like to check their prices, I think Electrorent is the biggest Sun rental companies. They should have a local number; if not, we can probably find one of their ads in a magazine. > If we can get > something running X windows at a good speed -- perhaps 2 > stations -- that should do it. Even 3/50's just running as > X terminals would do, driven by binky or clyde, as they were > in 308 and are on the 4th floor. The department has recently been paying $500-$600 for used 3/50's. Although they're old, we can do in-house maintenance on them, which lowers the cost of ownership compared to a new X terminal, and you can't buy an X terminal with a 19" screen for anything like that price. For color, 3/60's are available for about $900 (16" 1152x900 monitors). > What are the installation and maintenance problems to be > encountered in putting X terminals in the ETC lab? > Does it make > a difference that ETC already has a thinnet cable servicing > our PC-NFS network subnetted under beaver? The terminals or workstations could be connected to the same network. ICS charges a $100 installation fee, which includes all cabling and transceivers which are necessary for the hookup. Hardware maintenance on most Sun stations from the department is $20/month. Software maintenance is covered through the fee you pay for each user account, so there's no additional charge for that. There's no on-going fee for the network connection either. There's no generally-available SPARC server in the trailers area. So if you bought SPARCstations, they should have enough disk that they would not depend on having a local fileserver for booting and normal operation. This is not a consideration with the X terminals, since all they need is a boot server, and there's more than one of those available in the trailers. /tm To: Alastair Milne cc: Rika Yoshii , Alfred Bork x-phone: 714/856-7553 Subject: Re: leasing Suns In-reply-to: Your message of Tue, 17 Nov 1992 14:16:25 -0800. The last time I checked, their price was $600 for a 3/50, so it's just within your budget. /tm ================================================== Replied: Mon, 07 Dec 92 16:34:24 -0800 Rika Yoshii Alfred Bork Tim Morgan x-phone: 714/856-7553 In-reply-to: Your message of Mon, 07 Dec 1992 14:03:36 -0800. <9212071403.aa10494@q2.ics.uci.edu> >>> November:294 MessageName: (Message November:294) SUBJECT: RE: VENDORS FOR SUN 3/50'S Date: Mon, 07 Dec 1992 16:39:50 -0800 From: John Romine To: Alastair Milne Cc: Rika Yoshii , Alfred Bork ---------------------------------------- I just tried calling Base-2, at 586-6530 (from the phone book), but a recording says the number is disconnected or no longer in service -- no new number given. 411 inquiries say they don't have a Base-2 in Lake Forest.
