BACKGROUND

This discussion of the Scientific Reasoning Series begins by identifying ways that people learn within science, clarifying the term ``scientific literacy.'' The reader might read ''science, mathematics, and technology'' in most places where the word ``science'' appears. This section places the Series within the range of possible science learning; it could be skipped by anyone interested only in the computer-based learning units.

Details of the project, including development strategies, follow this discussion. The development system has been used for many other interactive modules developed at the Educational Technology Center. Then each of the modules is discussed briefly, followed by suggestions for use. Finally, I mention the implications for the future of science education.
