Learning to Solve Problems

Another type of science learning concerns problem solving capabilities for specialized problems in an area of science, or, for solving problems in a broader sense. Many science courses have some component of learning to solve problems, often combined with content. Students often learn to solve specific types of problems; many in such environments do not learn general problem solving techniques. Solving problems is a much discussed skill in our society, but few courses pursue this in full detail. Problem solving may be domain specific, with tactics differing from area to area.

Beginning courses in science, mathematics, and engineering often have strong emphasis on problem solving in the area. Testing of students is largely or entirely based on problem solving. But little explicit help on general problem solving skills is available.
