p-System Boot Volume and Prefixed Volume

The prefixed volume is the volume whose name the filing system uses as the default prefix for any file reference where the volume name is not given -- so-called because the syntax of a full file name reference prefixes the volume name to the file name. It can be abbreviated as : in file references, though since it will be the default anyway, there is usually little reason to do so.

The root or boot volume is the one from which the system originally booted. It may be abbreviated as * -- so references such as *SYSTEM.LIBRARY or *:SYSTEM.LIBRARY refer to the copy on the root volume.
