NOTE: the notation < NAME> means to press the key labelled
``name''. It does not mean to type ``name'' at the keyboard.
- Make sure both screen and system are switched on, and that the DOS
prompt (whether in DOS itself or in Norton Commander) is awaiting you.
- Make sure the ``current directory'' is C:
DEMOS. If you are
not sure that it is, enter:
`` C: < RETURN> ''
then
`` CD
DEMOS < RETURN> ''.
- Choose which of the 10 dialogues of Scientific Reasoning you wish
to see. If you want to see them listed (along with the other
demonstration dialogues availabe), type
`` DIR < RETURN>''.
Change the current directory to that of the dialogue you want to run. For
instance, `` CD REFLECTNS < RETURN>''. Be careful to spell the name the way
you see it listed.
- Enter `` G < RETURN> ''. The dialogue should start running, and
take over the screen in a few seconds. If it does not, there may be a
small problem with the dialogue's arrangement on the machine. Try
entering `` SRSWORLD < RETURN>'' instead. (You can also use ``
STARTUP < RETURN>'' if need be, but then the screen will not be restored
from graphics mode after the dialogue.)
- Now follow the dialogue's directions.
- From within a section (module, activity), a different section
in the same dialogue can be chosen by:
- Pressing < ESC>
- Pressing ``N'' for "New section?"
- Confirming by typing ``YES'' then pressing < RETURN>. (Or if you
change your mind, type ``NO'', then < RETURN>, and your activity will
proceed as if you had not interrupted it.)
If you type anything but YES or NO, precisely, your answer is
erased and the confirmation request is repeated.
- From with a section, the whole dialogue can be terminated by the
same sequence, except that you press ``Q'' for ``Quit program?'' instead
of ``N''. The same confirmation request is then given.
- After you have finished with the dialogue, you may want to run
another. First, type `` CD .. < RETURN> '', taking care to enter exactly
two ``.''s. This will return you to the DEMOS
directory. You can now
return to step 2, choosing the next dialogue you want to see.
NOTE: the Scientific Reasoning Series does not require or use the
mouse. If there is one attached to the machine, SRS ignores it.
When you have finished sampling the Scientific Reasoning Series, you may
leave the machine just as it is, or switch it off, or move to other
demonstrations.
PROBLEMS? These instructions assume the machines still have their
correct arrangement as was initially set up. The second-last section of
these instructions list problems you might encounter with the demonstrations
assuming they are properly set up, and what you can do about them.
The final section describes the necessary machine setup, in case it might
have been changed.
