Understanding Spoken Japanese (USJ)

IMPORTANT:
Please be very careful of the videodiscs.
They are the only ones the Center has, and no more can be made.

Before running the demonstration:

To run a module of ``Understanding Spoken Japanese - I'':

  1. Make sure both screen and system are switched on, and that the DOS prompt (whether in DOS itself or in Norton Commander) is awaiting you.
  2. Make sure the ``current directory'' is C: USJ-I. If you are not sure that it is, enter:
    `` C: < RETURN> '' then
    `` CD USJ-I < RETURN>''.
  3. Enter `` RUNUSJ < RETURN> ''. You may see several additional commands run automatically, then USJ-I will start the videodisc player, which may take a few moments.
  4. USJ-I will then stop the player again for you to check that the correct videodisc is in it. If you still need to do this, then follow the instructions that appear.

  5. If, during this, or at any other time during your session, you see a red box with the message ``Player is not responding.'',
    1. Make sure the videodisc player has power (lights should be glowing on its front).
    2. If the videodisc player is the Sony 2000, then wait for the red light STANDBY on its left panel to switch off.
    3. If the player is a Pioneer 4200, wait for the blinking green light on its front panel to become steady.
    4. Press < RETURN> again. Although unlikely, it is possible you may need to repeat this cycle more than once before the program receives the response it needs from the player.

USJ should be able to control the player again after several seconds. (In the rare case when this doesn't happen, it may be necessary to break out of USJ-I using < CTRL>-< BREAK>; or in fact to reboot.)

  6. To terminate the section you are using, or the whole USJ-I system, at any time, use the mouse to click on the Extra Services button, or press < ESC>. A menu will appear in the middle of the screen. Click on the item you want, or click on Return to lesson to remove the menu and resume the section as if it had not been interrupted.

To run a module of ``Understanding Spoken Japanese - II'':

  1. Make sure both screen and system are switched on, and that the DOS prompt (whether in DOS itself or in Norton Commander) is awaiting you.
  2. Make sure the ``current directory'' is C: USJ-II. If you are not sure that it is, enter:
    `` C: < RETURN> '' then
    `` CD USJ-II < RETURN>''.
  3. Start the USJ-II dialogue by typing `` USJII < RETURN> ''. Note the spelling!. When the USJ-II system has started, it will display an opening video of scenes of Japan, then guide you to picking an activity.

( NOTE: It is possible that USJ-II will ``freeze'' (cease activity and ignore keystrokes or mouse clicks) at some point during the session. This is a known problem. You may attempt to break it and return to DOS, by using < CTRL>-< BREAK>, but if this doesn't work you will have to reboot, by switching the PS/2 off, waiting 10 seconds, then switching it on again.)

  4. When you have finished with USJ-II, we recommend you exit from it completely, past the activity selection menu, to allow other demonstrations to run.
Make sure all videodiscs that are not in videodisc players are in their jackets and accounted for!

NOTE: ``Understanding Spoken Japanese'' is not as fast to start as the Scientific Reasoning Series. But if a wait seems to be getting too long, look at (and listen to) the videodisc player to see if it is still in the process of engaging the videodisc and starting up.
