The telecommunications service industry leads the commercial world in the amount of data collected to support its business. Historically these data were collected for billing and engineering purposes. Today these data are being used to address new tasks in fraud detection, risk management, and marketing. We discuss a spectrum of applications that convey the various sizes and shapes of telecommunication data streams and resulting monitoring systems. A common paradigm has emerged from these applications and we discuss the implication of this for developing a high-level programming interface for network data analysis and monitoring.
