Doug Freeman, chair of the "Shaping the Future" campaign and former chair of the UCI foundation will be joining us that evening to discuss the campaign. Gillian Hayes, assistant professor of informatics, and Dan Cooper, MD, from the UCI School of Medicine will offer an overview on their collaboration in the area of e-Health.

UC Irvine establishes Center for Computer Games and Virtual Worlds
UC Irvine’s Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences has established the Center for Computer Games & Virtual Worlds, led by ICS Associate Dean Magda El Zarki and senior research scientist Walt Scacchi of the UCI Institute for Software Research.
The center’s goal is to expand campuswide research activities that draw upon UCI’s strengths spanning the social and technological aspects of games and virtual worlds. More than 20 faculty members from computer science, arts, humanities, social science and education will collaborate in the center.
Richardson, Redmiles named Fellows of Automated Software Engeineering
Debra J. Richardson, The Ted and Janice Smith Family Foundation Dean for the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, and David Redmiles, Chair of the Department of Informatics at the Bren School, have both been named Fellows of Automated Software Engineering (ASE).
Donald Bren Hall receives LEED Gold award for green construction
For the fourth time since March, 2007, UC Irvine has earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for excellence in environmentally responsible building design, construction and operation. The most recent award went to Donald Bren Hall.
The 147,975-square-foot facility completed in March 2007 provides research, classroom and office space for faculty and students in the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences.
Study Finds Patent Systems May Not Be An Effective Incentive To Encourage New Technologies
A new study published in The Columbia Science and Technology Law Review challenges the traditional view that patents foster innovation, suggesting instead that patents may harm new technology, economic activity, and societal wealth. These results may have important policy implications because many countries count on patent systems to spur new technology and promote economic growth.
WSJ ARTICLE: Winning Netflix Team Draws From AT&T, Yahoo
BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos took the $1 million prize in a competition that pitted 41,000 teams from 186 countries, all trying to improve Netflix’s movie-recommendation system, also known as Cinematch, by 10%. It was a goal that Netflix itself hadn’t been able to accomplish. Contest judges included Stanley Lanning and Jon Sanders, senior engineers at Netflix; Charles Elkan, a computer-science professor at the University of California at San Diego; and Padhraic Smyth, a computer-science professor at the University of California at Irvine.
