Personal Information

Since this is MY page, I'm including some personal information.

On Time:

  • I was born in 1977. Therefore, I do not remember:
    • the widespread use of COBOL,
    • the invention of Bang-Path addressing,
    • the heyday of VAX,
    • when the Internet was called ARPAnet, and
    • the Carter Administration.
  • I do remember:
    • the widespread use of BASIC,
    • the Internet before the Web but after Gopher,
    • the heyday of the Commdore 64 and Apple ][e (I'm a Commodore 128 man, myself),
    • being on America On-Line when it was called Quantum-Link (Q-Link), a service for C64 users,
    • the Reagan administration.
On Likes:
  • Things I enjoy:
    • Writing code. I do remember a time when the Software Engineering discipline hadn't reduced "computer programmer" to the level of a glorified clerical position. I guess I prefer "software developer" which hasn't yet lost its lustre. Building software is something very special.
    • Playing harmonica. I prefer Hohner Special 20's, but I also play a Hohner Blues Harp.
    • Learning to play Guitar. I have a Martin steel string that I sing along with in my spare time.
    • Classic Rock from about 1965-1980. I also enjoy similar music from later decades. Excluded from this list are the Beatles and Elvis Presley.
    • Playing golf at tiny executive courses with friends who are as bad as I am.
    • A fun side-project I have going called Highlander vs. Star Wars. It's yet another Star Wars spoof. Already from doing this project, I've learned quite a bit about three dimensional modeling, rotoscopy, video editing, and low-budget filmmaking. I also sewed all the costumes myself.
    • Good stories.
    • Learning useless facts about all sorts of things.
    • Special and magical experiences. I cite a non-exhaustive list:
      • Getting to see one of the last flying Japanese Zeroes in a mock-dogfight with a P-51 Mustang at the Planes of Fame air museum in Chino.
      • Singing "Hotel California" with ten thousand other people and the Eagles.
      • Participating in an actual Lightsaber duel.
      • Walking through the "secret" doorway behind the bookcase that hid Anne Frank and her family during World War II.
      • Having a Belgian waffle in Belgium.
      • Having lunch at the Delegate's Dining Room at the United Nations in New York.
      • South Coast Plaza at Christmas time.
      • Driving to San Francisco and back.
On Dislikes:
  • Things I do not enjoy:
    • Hiking
    • Backpacking
    • Camping
    • Mountain Climbing
    • Bicycling
    • Rollerblading
As an interesting sidenote, the above list makes me completely incompatible with about 90% of the people posting personal ads on the Internet. As nobody I know actually does any of these things on a reasonably regular basis, I can only conclude that the people who DO say they enjoy these things are lying. Most of these activities involve getting away from interesting things, so I can also conclude that the few people who are not lying about having these interests are boring.
