Why Exclusive and Shared?
Exclusive locks are too rigid
- people often forget to release locks
- requires an administrator to release the lock
Shared locks allow people to use out-of-band communication to negotiate access to the resource
- if someone forgets to release a lock, it doesn’t hold up the entire group
