Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI): Generic Syntax (RFC 2396)

URI specification update area

The work progressed as follows:

1. I grabbed the old set of URL RFCs and removed the header/footer garbage that makes diff comparisons difficult.
2. I created a base document that merges RFC 1738 and RFC 1808 without changing any of the effective content, except in that all of the scheme-specific definitions are removed.
3. I created test pages for relative URL parsing, parts one, two, three, four, and five, and have tested a few common browsers.
4. I wrote the first three drafts (changes noted in the last appendix):
   • draft-fielding-url-syntax-00.txt
   • diff from 00 to 01, draft-fielding-url-syntax-01.txt
   • diff from 01 to 02, draft-fielding-url-syntax-02.txt
   and then passed the editor's baton to Larry Masinter for the next three
   • diff from 02 to 03, draft-fielding-url-syntax-03.txt
   • diff from 03 to 04, draft-fielding-url-syntax-04.txt
   • diff from 04 to 05, draft-fielding-url-syntax-05.txt
   • diff from 05 to 06, draft-fielding-url-syntax-06.txt
   and we have been collaborating on the last three
   • diff from 06 to 07, draft-fielding-url-syntax-07.txt
   • diff from 07 to 08, draft-fielding-url-syntax-08.txt
   • diff from 08 to 09, draft-fielding-url-syntax-09.txt
   and finally we changed from URL to URI Syntax
   • diff from 09 to uri-00, draft-fielding-uri-syntax-00.txt
   • diff from 00 to 01, draft-fielding-uri-syntax-01.txt
   • diff from 01 to 02, draft-fielding-uri-syntax-02.txt
   • diff from 02 to 03, draft-fielding-uri-syntax-03.txt
   • diff from 03 to 04, draft-fielding-uri-syntax-04.txt
     Approved by the IESG as a Draft Standard, RFC 2396.
5. Discussion of the revisions took place on the URI mailing list (uri@bunyip.com).
