ICS 21 Fall 2009
Enrollment Information

Introduction to Computer Science I
Norman Jacobson, Instructor

It takes many different resources to teach ICS 21, including course staff, classroom seats and computers. The major limitation on enrollment this quarter is the number of seats in lecture. As of this writing, the class has room for about 40 more students, and it is usually the case that some enrolled students drop the course early on, making more room for those wishing to add.

We discuss below how to get in to ICS 21, stay in, make changes, and get out; follow the directions here to minimize your hassles.

To add the course, or change your lab section

Regular UCI Students

Even while waiting to add the course, you should participate in it. Exam dates for new adds are the same as other students, so if you do not keep up with the work, you will be at a serious disadvantage. Come to lecture; take a seat. Go to the ICS 21 Help Center so you can work on your lab assignments where help from the TA and tutor is available. Yes, there is a very low chance that you will do the work and still not be allowed to enroll, but we do expect to be able to enroll all.

So-called "electronic add-drop" is active for this course. Through October 9, if you are a regularly enrolled UCI student (that is, not an Access student), to add this course, simply add yourself to the wait list for it via WebReg. (If WebReg will not allow you to add, see the instructor.) The registration system will add you into the course when there is an opening, and will send you email (to your UCInetID) to let you know you have been added. It's possible you will not be added; but, as dicussed above, your chances of getting in are quite high.

If you are on the waitlist and decide you do not want to be added, do remove yourself fom it.

For more information about how course wait lists work, see the Registrar's Waitlist Option web page.

If you want to add the course after October 9, see the instructor; you will be added if space permits and you convince the instructor that you are not so far “behind” as to be unable to “catch up.”

ACCESS Students

If you are an Access student, see the instructor with your Access enrollment form in hand. (You cannot add the class via WebReg.) Access students will be added, space permitting, after all regularly-enrolled UCI students. Since Access students do not have a UCI ID number, we make up a fake one for you so we can report your exam scores and course grade to you. Make a record of it. We’ll be using it throughout the quarter as your ID number.

To change your grading status

...to pass/not pass or back again: Obtain the instructor’s signature on a change card.

To drop the course

Through October 9, just go to WebReg to drop the course.

If you wish to drop the course after October 9, you must see the instructor and obtain the instructor’s signature on a drop card; be prepared to give solid reasons why you must drop the course. Note that after November 6 (“Friday of the sixth week”) you will need both the instructor’s and the Dean’s signature to drop the course; permission is given only if you must drop because of major negative medical, financial or personal circumstances beyond your control—Doing poorly in the course is not a sufficient reason.

See the web page ICS Add-Drop-Change Policies, Policies, Practices and Deadlines section, for more information about ICS’ add, drop and change policies.

Registrar Deadlines

For the Registrar's Office to accept your add/drop/change card without a Dean’s signature, it must be turned in to the Office no later than 5 pm on November 6. The Registrar will typically refuse to accept your card even seconds after this deadline! If you miss the deadline, you’ll have to complete another card and obtain both the instructor’s and Dean’s signatures.
