Nithya Sambasivan - User Experience Researcher at Google.org

Starting in May 2012, I will be a User Experience Researcher at Google.org, the non-profit division of Google, doing ICT4D research in Africa. My research interests are in technology design for socio-economic development (ICT4D) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI).

I have a PhD. in Information and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Irvine. I was advised by Prof. Bonnie Nardi, and worked closely with Ed Cutrell and Profs. Alladi Venkatesh, Don Patterson, and Bill Maurer. My dissertation focussed on re-conceptualizing "the user" and understanding sharing in low-income communities in India--in urban microenterprises, sex workers, and slum communities. I graduated with a Master of Science in Human Computer Interaction from Georgia Tech, in 2007, where I worked with Prof. Mike Best, among others.

I spent three summers doing ICT4D research at Microsoft Research India. I have also worked as a research intern at Nokia Research Center in Tampere, Finland and IBM TJ Watson Research Center, Hawthorne, NY.
