My office is Donald Bren Hall (DBH) 4062. I have most of my office hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday I'm also in the labs, so I'll hold "office hours" there then. |

I am going to hold online hours every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
and Sunday from 9:00pm-10:00pm.
I will be logged on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) as richardepattis
during these times.
If you are not already a member of AIM Sign Up for this service (it is free). Using this system, you will be able to Instant Message me, as well as use an audio (voice) connection if you have a headset with a microphone. Please be aware when you connect that I may be having multiple conversations, and therefore react more slowly than you might expect. Also, unless your username mirrors your actual name, I'll have no idea who you are. In addition, if you have installed realVNC (Virtual Network Computing) on your computer, it allows me (and other staff) to monitor and manipulate your computer directly from mine. For some problems, this is an excellent way to communicate. |
| TA/Tutor Consulting Hours |
Our TA and Lab Tutors will be available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
afternoons (prime days for programs due Wednesday evening), and Monday
evening as well, to help you debug your programs, mostly
in ICS 364 (which is open long hours) and online (again, via
AOL IM).
These interactions are designed to get you over any small Java problems that you encounter while writing, editing, compiling, running, testing, and debugging your programs. The interactions are one-to-one and should be short (5-10 minutes). Be prepared to explain what you have done up to the point when you encountered the problem, and be prepared to answer relevant questions about your program that the TA/Tutors may pose. The expectation is that you and the TA/Lab Tutor will cooperatively correct the problem, and that you will learn something in the process, to make future interactions less likely (do not expect the TA/Lab Tutor just to fix the problem for you). Remember, all these interactions are designed to help you overcome small programming problems. They are not designed for the TA/Tutor to write/debug large parts of your program. As the quarter progresses, and your programming skill grows, you should be relying on this kind of help less frequently (and when you need it, you should be able to ask very directed questions). If you are having programming problems on a large scale, you should see your instructor. |
