11/11/03 CANDE Planning Meeting at ICCAD 2003

CANDE met in the regular meeting at ICCAD on Tuesday, November 11, at noon.  Attendance at this meeting was about 25, smaller than usual as we competed with many other meetings at ICCAD.  The chairman, Mark Santoro, opened the meeting by introducing the current CANDE
Officers:
    Dick Smith    Past Chairman
    Mark Santoro    Chairman
    Alan Mantooth    Secretary
    Chuck Shaw    Treasurer
Forest Brewer    Officer-at-Large with 2 years remaining
Grant Martin    Officer-at-Large with 1 year remaining

Although Alan Mantooth (the outgoing Treasurer) was not present, a brief Treasurer's report was given containing only the information that the workshop was successful and had a very modest surplus as was planned.

Mark summarized the CANDE Workshop held at Taos, New Mexico in September.  As has become usual, very interesting topics created lots of discussion in the sessions.  The location was quite beautiful and CANDE had the facility pretty much to ourselves.  As usual, there were plenty of opportunities for discussion of relevant topics among the attendees.

During the business meeting at the Workshop, a proposed change to the by-laws was approved.  The change provides for membership to those who regularly attend business meetings but have not had the opportunity to attend a workshop (as has been required for membership in the past).
The change provides that one becomes a member either by attending a Workshop or by attending three regular meetings.

Dick Smith provided a brief version of a presentation he made at the CASS BoG Meeting on Sunday, providing information on the history of CANDE and CANDE activities today.  Part of the presentation discussed CANDE becoming more visible in CASS in support of its activities in
the EDA Industry.  To that end, a motion was presented and passed by the BoG which will change the CASS sponsorship of DAC and ICCAD to read "sponsored by IEEE CASS/CANDE".  A second part of the motion, also passed, was that CANDE will, in consultation with the VP-Conferences and subject to approval by the CASS President, appoint all CASS representatives to the DAC and ICCAD conferences.

Other items raised by the BoG meeting:

- The TCAD Best Paper Award has been named the Donald Pederson Award in honor of his being the father (or Godfather, as some of us would say) of SPICE and his many other contributions to the EDA Industry.

- Passage of the CANDE motion brings issues of implementation such as selecting the representatives, etc.  The CANDE Officers will be working on these challenges over the next few weeks.
- CANDE needs a logo.  Suggestions are welcomed.
- CANDE will need a Board to help implement the many tasks now before us.  Following the SIGDA model, this Board will be made of the Officers and the chairmen of committees fulfilling the requirements - such as the nominations committee.
- CANDE has been asked to contribute someone to serve on the CAS Magazine Ed Board and to contribute an occasional article as well.

2004 Workshop Planning:
Location Suggestions - the locations suggested for the
next workshop were:
    Cabo San Lucas
    Hawaii
    Costa Rica
    Northern Vermont
    Coeur d'Alene Idaho
    Montana
    Oregon
We will work on narrowing this list over the next few weeks to select at most two or three for final selection.

Topic Suggestions - all topic suggestions must come with someone who will be responsible with developing or finding someone who will develop a session for final selection at the meeting at DAC.  Other suggestions are welcome from the rest of the members under the same restriction.  The suggestions collected are:
Embedded Software Development - Chuck Shaw and Larry Rosenberg
Emerging China - fabs, IP, Design & EDA - Larry Rosenberg
Ontologies for EDA - Alex Zamfirescu
Reliability, Variability, ...  - John Cohn
Merging ECAD & MCAD - Rhett Davis
    EDA Technology - Rajesh Gupta
National Design Methodology for Universities - John Cohn
Emerging Session, EDA Professionals - Pipeline - John Cohn and one left from the last workshop:
    Open Source - Jaijeet Roychowdhury

6/4/03 CANDE Planning Meeting at DAC 2003
The Summer Planning Meeting for CANDE was held on Wednesday evening at DAC in Anaheim.  There were 52 members and guests present.  The meeting began with a half-hour of social time to greet old friends and those new to CANDE.  As usual, it was difficult to get the meeting started with everyone enjoying the opportunity to catch up.  The meeting was called to order promptly at 6:00PM in order to finish in time to make the DAC function that began at 7:00PM.  A show of hands indicated many people at the meeting who were new to CANDE.  The meeting began with a brief introduction to CANDE and the Workshop.

To better organize the various CANDE activities, new committees are being formed.  The first committee is the Nominations Committee, and Chuck Shaw has agreed to lead it.  This committee will develop a slate of nominees for CANDE and CASS positions, recommend CANDE members for industry recognition and promote CANDE members to advanced IEEE member status.  Those interested in assisting Chuck on this committee should contact him directly.  Chuck has been successful in fielding several candidates for the upcoming CASS Board of Governors election.

Several other committees are being formed to support CANDE activities.  These are:
  • Membership – to maintain the roster of CANDE members and to encourage new members
  • Projects – to review project proposals submitted to CANDE and recommend their support to             CASS for funding
  • Publicity – to promote CANDE and it’s activities
  • Website – to maintain and develop the CANDE website
  • Workshop Program – to develop the program for the fall workshop
Some progress has already been made in the committee areas.  Rajesh Gupta and Patrick Schaumont have been working on the website.  Through efforts of a number of CANDE members, a proposal for support of the VHPI-AMS has been supported to CASS and resulted in a grant of $5,000 for the project.  CANDE members were encouraged to participate on these committees.  Several people volunteered to assist with these committees.  More are needed.

Two new items were introduced as potential CANDE projects.  These are a CANDE Newsletter and a CANDE logo.  No action was taken on these projects at this time, but they will be discussed again at the workshop meeting in September.

A primary goal of the CANDE meeting at DAC is to prepare for the Fall Workshop.  This year the Workshop will be held at the Inn at Snakedance in Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico.  Colleen reports that the Inn is about two hours and forty-five minutes from the Albuquerque airport and about one hour and forty-five minutes from the Santa Fe airport.  Transportation is available, but it is probably better to share rides.  We will help with getting people together.  The timing for the workshop is such that the area will be beautiful for a visit.  If extra days are desired, contact Colleen.  The dates for the Workshop are Thursday, September 11 to Saturday, September 13.  While the cost for the Workshop has not yet been set, expect something less than $500 including lodging on Thursday and Friday nights and all group meals during the Workshop.

CANDE Members can expect the Workshop Announcement by July 15.  Early registration is highly recommended.  Workshop Announcements will be emailed to all those interested by August 1.  The hotel guarantee is open until August 15.  After August 15, registrations are on a space available basis and will depend on the ability of the hotel to find space.

The Workshop topics suggested at the ICCAD meeting were reviewed and one or two additions were made.  Feedback from some members had been received suggesting session chairmen and potential speakers.  This information will be collected and a program assembled from the available material.  It is hoped that by next year, a Program Committee will be in place to start the process just after the ICCAD meeting.

11/12/02 CANDE Planning Meeting at ICCAD 2002

The regular CANDE meeting at ICCAD was held on Tuesday evening, November 12, from 5:00pm until 6:00pm.  The meeting was somewhat shorter than usual because the conference banquet began early this year.  About 20 members and guests were present.

The agenda covered four basic items:  a short review of the 2002 Workshop,  selection of an area for the 2003 Workshop, generation of a list of topics of interest for the 2003 Workshop and listing projects that CANDE needs to  work on during the coming year.

Mark Flomenhoft reported on the very successful Workshop held in September at the Alyeska Resort in Alaska.  The location was spectacular and the discussions were great.  Mark noted that it is significant that CANDE, which began with discussions on simulation and modeling has just held a  workshop devoted to systems design.  The talks and interactions during  the sessions were interesting and lively.  And Jaijeet entertained all of us during dinner.  Thanks to everyone who made this year's workshop one  of the best we have had.

Moving Onward to 2003 Workshop:
The dates for next year will be September 11-13, 14-16, 18-20 or 21-23.  Normally, we try to schedule to begin on Thursday evening but arrangements may require that we begin on Sunday evening.  Several areas were proposed for the 2003 Workshop.  They were New Mexico (Taos or Santa Fe), Arizona (Grand Canyon), some ski area, the Northeast (Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket), and the Northern California or Oregon (Portland or Bend) areas.  The ski area and the Northeast were eliminated in the first round of voting.  The Oregon/No. California area was eliminated next.  And finally, the choice was to hold the workshop in the New Mexico area.  To remind everyone, the ideal choice is a location conducive to discussion and without the distractions of a major city.  The location is to be with two hours driving time of a major airport.

A number of discussion topics were suggested as being of interest for the 2003 Workshop.  These are:
  •     Modeling and the Impact on EDA of the New Devices
  •     ASIC/FPGA - Where Is It Going and What Are the Trends
  •     The Cost of Design - the Impact
  •     HW/SW - SW Verification
  •     Solved Problems - Who's Kidding Whom!
  •     Analog/Mixed Signal
  •     Low Power
  •     Programing Paradigms for Reconfigurable Architectures
  •     45nm and the Impact on Design
  •     Design for Quality
Our objective is to have investigated the discussion topics prior to the meeting at DAC.  A final program can be selected at that time.  I  am asking now for those interested in working on one of these topics or a suggestion of someone who can do that for us.  The organizers will need to check with potential speakers prior to final selection at the DAC meeting.  Let's get started now by volunteering to be an organizer or by recommending someone.  And by the way, if you have a hot topic you would like to add to the list, let me know by supplying your name or that of another colleague to organize the session.

CANDE has some projects that need to be initiated or accomplished this year.  We are going to formalize the process a bit by establishing small groups to work on these projects.  The projects are listed here and this is a call for members to participate.  Take a look at the list and find a project that interests you.  Let me know and I will add you to that team.  The projects are:

0 Membership - For many years, CANDE regularly attracted new members to   the workshop each year.  Those new members always included many recent graduates who were beginning their careers.  The process seems to have broken down about 10 years ago and needs to be re-initialized.

0 Member Recognition - EDA professionals (not just CANDE members) do not share industry recognition to the extent found in other EE disciplines. Let's work to move our members up through Senior Member to Fellows of the IEEE.

0 CANDE has grown through member recommendation and word-of-mouth.  Let's put together some publicity to let the rest of our colleagues know that  we are hear and what we do.

0 CANDE receives solicitations each year for funding of special projects in our industry.  CANDE is able to recommend the allocation of surplus funds from our two industry conferences - ICCAD and DAC.  We need a team to evaluate proposals, solicit proposals and make recommendations to CASS for funding.

0 The recognition and appreciation of EDA professionals within CASS has not been to the level we believe is appropriate.  Although several of our members have been working to correct the situation, a more organized and supported effort is needed.  This project seeks to elevate EDA as a recognized and appreciated member of CASS and/or IEEE.

Once again, your involvement is needed now.  Choose a project to support or a workshop topic to develop and let me know what you would like to do.

6/12/02 CANDE Planning Meeting at DAC 2002

The Summer Planning Meeting for CANDE was held on Wednesday evening at DAC in New Orleans.  There were 35 members and guests present.  The meeting began with a half-hour of social time to greet old friends and those new to CANDE.  Mark Flomenhoft called the meeting to order promptly at 6:00PM with a brief introduction to CANDE and the Workshop.  Our thanks, once again, were extended to Colleen for arrangements for the meeting and preparation for the Workshop.

The Treasurers Report was provided by Dick Smith for Mark Santoro.  CANDE is solvent with $9913 and change in the bank.  IEEE CASS has again sponsored the Planning Meeting at DAC.  CASS’s sponsorship helps to keep the cost of the workshop as low as possible.  Barbara Wehner in the CASS Administration office was very helpful, as always.

Note that the ICCAD Executive Committee is requesting input on the past Best Papers of ICCAD in preparation for celebration of the 20th Year Anniversary.  A call for recommendations was emailed to the CANDE members.  Note that the deadline for submissions in June 20.

There is another call for nominations to the position of Fellow of the IEEE from among those in the CAD community.  Nominations must be from those who are already Senior Members.  Ian Getreu and Paul Menchini volunteered to pursue both nominations and getting more of our associates to the Senior level.  Barbara Wehner can provide a list of all Senior Members.

A primary goal of the planning meeting is to prepare for the Fall Workshop.  This year the Workshop will be held at the Westin Alyeska Prince in Anchorage, Alaska.  Colleen reports that airfare from the Bay Area is about $350 for reservations made well in advance.  The dates for the Workshop are Sunday, September 22 to Tuesday, September 24.  While the cost for the Workshop has not yet been set, expect something less than $600 which includes lodging on Sunday and Monday night and all food and beverages during the Workshop.

CANDE Member can expect the Workshop Announcement by July 15.

The elimination process consisted of making sure someone would work on pulling together a discussion on the topic and then a vote to find those few of highest interest.  The results were:
* Impact of Cost on EDA – Leon Stok
* Power Issues – Massoud Pedram
* H/W Dependent S/W – Grant Martin
* Asynchronous Design Issues – Vassilios Gerousis
* Using IP – Mark Flomenhoft
A number of topics were proposed for the evening session.  Again, a process of elimination was used to choose a single topic – “Optical Interconnections On-chip”.  Ian Getreu and Ellen Yoffa will organize this after-dinner session.

Questions were raised about discussing new proposals at the Workshop.  This can be done at lunch on Monday or Tuesday.  There is typically a business meeting held at the end of lunch on the last day.

Nanni DeMicheli discussed some of the financial problems that have beset IEEE and IEEE/CASS.  CASS now finds that instead of a large surplus, it has a deficit.  There is concern over the DAC surplus since that surplus is to be used to further the EDA industry rather than the operating expenses of the sponsoring societies.

11/6/01 CANDE Planning Meeting at ICCAD 2001

The Fall Planning Meeting for CANDE was held on Tuesday evening at ICCAD.  There were 39 members and guests present.  Mark Flomenhoft called the meeting to order and began with a report on the workshop held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  After much discussion and watching the airlines get back in the air, the decision was made to hold the workshop in spite of the terrorist attacks the week before the workshop began.  The result was one of the best workshops we have held in years!  Difficulty in traveling from Europe and general concern with flying reduced the number of attendees to 31.  The small number made for extremely interactive and lively discussions in the sessions.  Ian Getreu lead a very good session to create the 5-year CANDE Predictions.  The predictions’ quality was much better than our last attempt.  The results are posted on the CANDE website.

Congratulations to Karti Mayaram who has been elected to be the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on CAD.  Congratulations (or condolences as Mark refers to himself) to the newly elected CASS Board of Governors members:  Eby Friedman, Jason Cong and Mark Flomenhoft.  Mark also happily announced that Nanni (Giovanni De Micheli) is the new President-elect of CASS.

Election for CANDE officers was held at the workshop.  They are:
 Past Chair:  Rajesh Gupta
 Chair:  Mark Flomenhoft
 Secretary:  Dick Smith
 Treasurer:  Mark Santoro
Officers-at-Large:  Andrew Kahng and Chuck Shaw

CANDE owes a special thanks to Rajesh Gupta for his excellent leadership while our chairman and especially for his diligent attention to raising CANDE’s stature within CASS.  We note that he did extra duty as his term was extended when the workshop date was moved from April to September.

On a couple of occasions, but especially after the attacks on September 11, it was clear that input from more than just the CANDE Officers was needed.  An ad hoc group of about 8 members met by teleconference several days after the attacks to decide whether to hold or cancel the workshop at Jackson Hole.  As a result, an Advisory Committee has been formed to advise and assist the officers with CANDE business.  The Committee was selected to have a mixed representation from academia and industry.  They are:  Al Dunlop, Alan Mantooth, Ellen Yoffa, Giovanni De Micheli, Ian Getreu, Paul Weil, Steve Sapiro and Wayne Wolf.

The Treasurer, Mark Santoro, reports that we just about broke even on the workshop in spite of the last minute cancellations.  The hotel was very good about making adjustments.  They were very happy to see us as several other meetings had cancelled.  We recognize CASS for their support of the workshop with a $7,000 grant and for their support of the meetings at ICCAD and DAC.  CANDE has funds in the bank to cover a deposit for the workshop next September.

Planning for the next workshop begins with selection of the site.  Ten potential sites were proposed, and a voting process focused it down to one.  Colleen will identify an appropriate spot in Alaska for the next workshop.  The timing should be good as our dates will be just after the close of their tourist season.  This will help to control the registration costs.  Discussion of the preferred dates centered on the weekend of September 20 with a fairly strong preference for Thursday to Saturday rather than Sunday to Tuesday.

The quality of this year’s workshop with fewer attendees led to a discussion of the maximum number of attendees that will be accepted.  The number of 50 was selected with a real preference for a few less.  Also, a goal of 1/3 new people will be formalized.

The events of this year have pointed out that a formal policy is needed on cancellations.  Dick Smith has been tasked with preparing a policy for review and adoption at the next CANDE meeting (DAC).
The Secretary (Dick Smith) reported that work is underway with Paul Weil to review and design a new and more permanent website.  The current site is being provided by UC Irvine and maintained by Rajesh.  Another issue to be addressed is the CANDE Member List.  An email list is currently the master list.  As a result, problems occur when members change jobs without informing CANDE of their new address.  Many names have been lost as the addresses begin to produce bounces.  All members will soon be receiving emails requesting additional information to assist with contacting them if they change jobs and also requesting assistance in locating those who have been lost.

CANDE received some publicity after the workshop from articles in Design and Test and from Richard Goering’s article on the predictions.

CANDE adopted bylaws last year.  There are several changes or additions that are being recommended at this time.  Changes can be made either at the workshop or by email vote.  The proposals are:
1. The officers-at-large be elected for two year terms that overlap.  Thus, one officer-at-large would be elected each year.
2. The Advisory Committee be made a formal part of the Bylaws.
3. Membership requirements and methods need to be made clearer.

One aspect of increasing the stature of the EDA Industry is through promotion and recognition of more members as IEEE Senior Members and Fellows.  The process for recognition as a Senior Member is easy and is the required before becoming a Fellow.  Chuck Shaw can provide both the forms and assistance in the Senior Member process.  Contact Chuck at:  shaw@cadence.com.

A number of topics were proposed for the sessions at next year’s workshop.  Over the next several months an organizer will need to be found for topics of interest.  Prior to the meeting at DAC, the organizer will need to have put the session together and identified presenters.  The final program will be selected at the DAC Planning Meeting.  Anyone interested in organizing one of the sessions should contact Mark Flomenhoft at mflomen@synopsys.com.  The proposed topics are:
 Hierarchy
 Power
 Platform Based Design
 Beyond Silicon
What’s Wrong with the ITRS Roadmap?
 Interoperability
 Microwave and RF
 H/W dependent S/W
Special Topics in Security & Defense
 Next Killer Applications
 Test
 Assistance for Disabilities
 Optical Interconnect On-chip
 Electronic Textiles
 Living Laboratories

During the past year, CASS has funded $129K in projects in the EDA area.  The budget for the coming year is $187K.  CANDE plays a role in determining which projects will be funded.  CANDE reviews one-time EDA projects and sends the recommendation to CASS.  There is a requirement that projects be one-time expenditures of funds rather than a commitment for recurring expenses.  A proposal from Martin Vlach in the analog area has been reviewed by Ian Getreu, reported out and approved.  A proposal from Accellera has yet to find a sponsor and several questions still exist.  Larry Rosenberg will review it and report.

6/20/01 CANDE Planning Meeting at DAC 2001
Attendee list:
Dick Smith, Rajesh Gupta, Mark Flomenhoft, Ganapathi Srinivasa, Steve Sapiro, Vincent Mooney, James Spoto, Massoud Pedram, Martin Wong, Takahide Inoue, Paul Weil, Chuck Shaw, Dan Gajski, Jason Cong, Janet Smith, Mark Birnbaum, John Darringer, Andrew Kahng, Manfred Weisel, Ellen Yoffa, Charles Rosenthal, Hugo DeMan, Larry Rosenberg, Georges Gielen, Jim Sproch, Farid Najm, Giovanni DeMicheli, Wayne Wolf, Dwight Hill, Luciano Lavagno, Pai Chou, Gordon Adshead

0 Cande has lost two of our members this past year - Terry Coston and Peter
Verhofstadt.  Short tributes were given for each of them.  They will be
  greatly missed.

0 CAS has named Jason Cong and Massoud Pedram as new Fellows.  They are to
  be congratulated.

0 Aart de Geus received the IEEE CAS Industrial Pioneer Award.  In a reception
in his honor, Aart credited his association with CANDE and its exceptional
members for playing a large role in his success.

0 In the financial report, CANDE continues to be solvent.  Appreciation is
extended to IEEE CAS for sponsoring the meetings at both DAC and ICCAD
this year.  That sponsorship is extremely helpful to our organization.
Additionally, IEEE CAS sponsored two speakers at the workshop in 2000.
It is clear that both CANDE and IEEE CAS are benefitting from the closer
  relationship that is developing.

0 The need for inviting new and younger members into CANDE was discussed in
some detail.  The workshop registration will emphasize this need.  Members
in specific companies will be asked to find the correct people in their
organizations and bring them into CANDE.  It was pointed out that the
Synopsys website announcement of the award for Aart de Geus reference the
CANDE website and the importance of CANDE.  We may expect increased interest
  from this announcement.

0 The CANDE 2001 Workshop will be held at the Jackson Lake Lodges, Jackson Hole,
Wyoming on September 20 - 22.  Colleen Matteis, our meeting organizer, says
better airfares can be found by traveling to Idaho Falls or Pocatello, Idaho.
The drive is not too bad in order to save about $200 in airfare.  As for the
deadlines, current CANDE members have priority in registration until July 15.
After that time, invitations will be sent to all those whom other members
have sponsored.  The maximum number of attendees is 60.  August 10 is the last
day that the hotel will hold reserved space.  All registrations should be in
by that time to assure space at the workshop hotel.  Late registrations will
be processed as long as hotel space is available or other accomodations can
  be found.

0 The CANDE Predictions have been requested several times during the past year.
Since we didn't come up with a good set at the workshop last year, it is felt
that we need to revisit this topic.  Ian Getreu will guide this session at the
  workshop this year.

0 The workshop topics were discussed again with a goal of triming it to only
4 or 5.  The results are as follows:

  1. Predictions - Ian Getreu

  2. Paradigms (discontinuities)/Breakthroughs (where are they) in EDA
     - Dwight Hill

  3. Design Brick Walls (Moore's Law) - Andrew Kahng

  4. Micro/Nano Systems - Hugo DeMann

  5. Analog Synthesis - Steve Grout

0 The meeting adjourned.

0  Ian Getreu presented the new ICCAD Best Paper Award named for Bill
McCalla.  The presentation went well and the award is well received.
Ian did a great job in getting this award in place.  CANDE owes him
    recognition for his effort.

0  Rajesh has attempted to keep the CANDE email list updated.  Everyone is
encouraged to review the webpage and update their email address.  The
    address is www.cande.net.

0  The site for the next workshop will be Jackson Hole, WY.  There are four
hotels in the area that meet our budget.  The dates will be either
Sept. 20-22 or Oct. 4-6.  Colleen noted that it is much cheaper to
fly into Idaho Falls and drive to Jackson Hole - about 1 1/2 hours.

0  The following topics were discussed and suggested as possibilities
for the next workshop.  The actual topics will be chosen at the DAC
meeting in June.  Anyone interested in a specific topic should bring
a proposal to the DAC meeting.
    1. Where are the breakthroughs?
    2. Internet appliances
    3. EDA on the web
    4. Novel devices/optical/optoelectronics/MEMs
    5. Where is startup funding coming from?
    6. Systems on Chip
    7. Semiconductor processes - what is the impact?
    8. Future of Moore's Law (ends in 5 years - as always!!)
    9. Ultra HF CMOS
   10. Nanotechnology
   11. Fantasy technologies
   12. Analog synthesis
   13. Personal area networks
   14. Verification -
It was noted that most of these are outside the EDA scope..??

0  As requested in the last meeting, a set of bylaws was prepared by
Mark Flomenhoft and several others to present to CANDE for approval.
The desire is to provide some definition to existing processes and to
provide for discussions with CAS.  It is assumed the bylaws will be
improved and made more complete as time goes by.  It is significant
to mention that, as is the case now, the officers are able to conduct
business between regular meetings when necessary.  To assist in such
cases, two additional Officers-at-Large are included in the bylaws to
bring the number of voting officers to six.  The bylaws were adopted
by a vote of 11 for, 1 against and 4 abstentions who claimed they had
not read them.  Paul Weil and Giovanni De Micheli were named as Officers-
    at-Large.

0  It was discussed and noted that it is important that at least one of
the CANDE officers maintain contact with the CAS Society.  Rajesh has
done that very well this year.

0  Another discussion was held concerning the relationship with CAS.  DAC
contributes about $500K to CAS each year, yet CANDE is not represented
there.  In fact, the CAS Board has excluded all CAD people.

0  Chuck Shaw discussed the need to improve the recognition of EDA people
in the various ranks & ladders at IEEE.  This is very important for the
academic people.  He promoted election of EDA professionals to IEEE
    Senior and Fellow status.

6/7/00 CANDE Planning Meeting at DAC 2000

1. Attendee list

Steve Sapiro; Paul Weil; Justin Harlow; Don Bouldin; Steve Grout; Hillel Ofek; Chuck Shaw; Ellen Yoffa; Chris Lennard; Ian Getreu; Bryan Preas; Nanni De Micheli; Kathy Preas; Dick Smith; Alan Mantooth; Mark Birnbaum; Farid Najm; Steve Kang; Gordon Adshead; Henry Chang; Mani Srivastava; Alice Parker; Arny Goldfein; Rajesh Gupta

Ian reports good progress for the proposal to have the Best Paper Award at ICCAD named after Bill McCalla. The ICCAD Executive Committee has approved it unanamously. It was also approved last week by CAS. The next step is to set up an endowment fund (from the CAS portion of the DAC surplus funds) at IEEE. This requires 2 steps - approval by the IEEE Awards Committee, which should take place in August. The second step, approval by IEEE TAB, should occur in November, after ICCAD. However, if the Awards Committee approves it, we will go ahead for this year.

Nanni De Micheli reported the passing of Jon Allen and suggests that an appropriate recognition would to name for him the Best Paper Award in the Transactions on VLSI. Paul Weil points out that we are approaching the time when the EDA industry will be seeing the passing of several people who have made great contributions. After discussion, it was decided to appoint a sub-committee to review options and make a recommendation to CANDE. The sub-committee will be Nanni De Micheli, Paul Weil and Chuck Shaw.

All CANDE members are requested to look at the CANDE website (www.cande.net) and make sure your email address is correct. A discussion was held on the timing of the workshop each year. The September timeframe was suggested to provide for more options in site selection and reduced cost due to being between seasons. It was noted that the CANDE workshop was originally held during the late September timeframe. It was changed in an effort to promote additional submissions for the DAC technical program. The motion to move to September passed with 12 yes, 2 no and 3 abstains.

Mark Flomenhoft presented (by proxy) the suggestion that CANDE not restrict itself to never return to a location where a workshop had been held. The restriction would be reduced to a five year limit. The proposal was generally accepted.

Many suggestions were made for the 2001 workshop location. After a round of progressive voting, the top four suggestions (in order) were: Jackson Hole, Vancouver, French Canada, Banff. Since we are moving the timeframe to September, discussion of topics will begin at ICCAD.

The ACM representitive to the DAC Executive Committee is appointed by SIGDA. Some discussion was held on CANDE having input to the appointment of the representative from CAS. Rajesh will bring this subject forward to the new CAS president in the form of a suggestion.

There is a need to continue the process of collecting project proposals to bring forward to CAS Executive Committee for review and implementation. To facilitate collection, evaluation and presentation of these projects for CANDE, a sub-committee will be formed under the Treasurer. The sub- committee is expected to have about three members.

CANDE needs to have a set of by-laws. Mark Flomenhoft was appointed to begin developing by-laws.

Don Bouldin and Rich Brown presented an initial proposal to create an infrastructure providing universities with IP blocks to support SOC design. The proposal is referred to the new sub-committee on projects for review and development.

  c.System level specification (Rajesh)

5. Suggestions on DAC surplus

Ellen Yoffa discussed suggestions for DAC surplus funds. The discussion on any additional proposals will be continued at the next CANDE meeting.

6. A presentation of the status of the CAD Benchmark example was given by Justin Harlow and Herman Schmit. Herman described the CMUDSP processor consisting of memory, control and datapath elements and implemented for a 0.5u process with frequency target of 30MHz. The CMUDSP "vertical benchmark" provides of a snapshot of the entire design process. This benchmark is 4X larger than any other publicly available benchmark.

7. Ian Getreu mentioned that Bill McCalla passed away. Bill had helped to found several CAD activities including ICCAD and was a prominent member of the CANDE community. The group discussed various proposals on memorial activities in honor of Bill.
