Source Code Searching Survey

Purpose
We're currently designing a lightweight source code searching tool. Minimally, this tool will support regular expression matching across files, similar to the UNIX utility grep.

We'd like to add some features to this tool, such as allowing searches like "find all variables beginning with a". Before we do this, we'd like to get some information from programmers on what kind of searches they currently perform on source code.

We're looking for concrete examples of searches regardless of programming language or operating platform. These searches could be done from inside the editor, using "File Find", or some other simple utility. We want are fairly detailed descriptions of specific searches.
