Past…

Just the basics:

Born in Riverside, CA (with my twin)

Oldest (by 4 minutes) of four girls

Met my husband at UC Riverside in April of 1995. We married in September of 1997.

Graduated with my B.S. at UC Riverside in 1999, and M.S. at UC Irvine in 2002 (both in Computer Science).

Our son, Jake, was born in June 2002.

Began lecturing at UC Irvine in 2002….

Present

Currently lecturing at UC Irvine… I to teach about computer architecture, embedded systems, and digital design.

Any past hobbies (mainly travel and gardening) have been shifted to our family’s main focus: Autism. My advice: if anyone tells you that autism is a lifelong sentence (even if it is the most prestigious neurologist in the world)…. RUN!!! For more info, visit www.tacanow.com.

Jake was diagnosed with autism when he was 1 year 8 months of age (February 2004).  Every day we focus on his recovery. We have come to understand that autism is an umbrella disorder that can be caused by several factors: genetic, environmental, immune insult, etc… We focus on treatments that speak to Jake’s unique biomedical profile. In the meantime he receives over 30 hours a week of direct one-on-one therapy. This is one hard working little boy. We have seen Jake make tremendous progress (you’d have to see him to believe him), and expect more fantastic progress in the future. Jake has become the hero of all his family.

Jake continues to amaze us. We are seeing tremendous gains, both in terms of health and development. He is starting to engage socially with peers, and his command of language steadily improves. He is the busiest 3 year old on the planet, but we pray that he will be indistinguishable from his peers in the not too distant future.

Jake’s personality is starting to blossom. He cracks us up everyday. He gives the most heart-melting looks, and his dimples let him get away with almost anything. He struggles most with his articulation and peer-social skills. The next batch of biomedical treatments scheduled are using Jake’s Hyperbaric-Oxygen Chamber on a regular basis, chelating heavy metals, homeopathy, and anti-virals.

We still manage to make time to travel. However our destinations are no longer as exotic, or as frequent as they once were.

We traveled to Jamica in April 05 (Best Memories: all food prepared for us, & doing nothing)

We just returned from Dubai, U.A.E (Best Memories: spending time with family, shopping, and hearing a tattooed metallica-t-shirt wearing man scream like a little girl on a desert dune ride), and Bombay, India (Best Memories: family, brother-in-law’s wedding, & shopping).

Future…

I hate to make predictions, but I do predict Jake’s recovery from Autism. While I have stopped imagining an over-night biomedical miracle, we have been incredibly blessed to have Jake under the care of Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, as well as several other world-renowned specialists. In January 06’, we changed biomedical paths. We began seeing Dr. Michael Goldberg. His treatment plan for Jake has been multi-disciplinary, and the results have been amazing.

Next planned vacation: Dubai, UAE in 2007. J
