Peer Editing Resume and Cover Letter

Work in pairs, with someone you haven't worked with yet this quarter. As you read and comment on each other's papers, keep in mind the purpose and audience of the document, which is to let people know, in less than a minute of reading, about something wonderful (you or the system changes).

The editor can mark-up the proposal, and will also write comments on a separate sheet of paper. Editors, make sure to write "Edited by" and your name at the top of both. Each author must turn in the editor's written comments along with the final version of the document.

Procedure for Editors

  1. Glance over the document, trying to get as much information as you can in less than 20 seconds.
    1. Did the document make it easy for you to find out a lot at a glance? Did typography, fonts, and organization guide your eyes to the most important points?
    2. Was there anything you were confused about after your quick glance?
  2. Now read the document again, slowly and carefully (this shouldn't take more that one minute).
    1. Is the document's tone appropriate? Does anything jar you as being inconsistent?
    2. Are there any mechanical errors (spelling, punctuation, grammar) that interfered with your reading of the document?
    3. Is the overall structure of the document easy to follow and understand? Does it say too much or too little?
    4. Do you have any other suggestions for the author?
  1. Review your comments with the author (and vice versa)
